I have a border collie/male. He is about 40-50lbs and 2 feet tall. I feed him 3 times a day about 1 cup each time. But, he still looks skinny. My question is how much should I be feeding him and how often.

Well, first of all, it really all depends on what kind of food you are feeding your puppy. For a growing puppy to be strong, it needs to have carbs, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, and protein. Second of all, your puppy's weight will catch up with him eventually. He is growing and he might be skinny for a while. You are feeding him enough and at the right times, in fact, if he is already 40-50lbs, he probably weighs too much. Border collies are supposed to weigh between 30-40lbs at full grown, so maybe as he is aging, you might want to be decreasing his food intake slightly. Hope this helps, best of luck!

Is he skinny looking, as in just a bit thin (meaning you can only slightly see his ribs) or does he look malnourished? If it's the former, than I'd say it's probably OK. I have an 8 month old boxer/heeler mix and I was concerned about his very thing a few months back, so I asked a vet about it. What she told me is that puppies (especially leaner dogs like a border collie) need to be slightly thin while they're still growing so their muscles will develop properly. She said it's perfectly normal and actually healthy if you can see their ribs just a bit. Also, you need to remember that at just 5 months, your puppy has ALOT of energy. He's probably burning off that food as it touches his mouth. As far as being concerned about worms, just keep a close eye on his stools. If they begin looking loose and/or slimey, then you might take him to the vet. It does sound like maybe you should be feeding him a little more. I know I feed mine around 4 cups a day, and he's right at around 40 lbs. Be sure and read the directions on his food to make sure you're giving him the proper amount.

Good Luck!

It sounds like you are feeding him about right. I would probably decrease it to two times a day but feed him maybe two cups twice a day. My dad had a Chocolate Lab and that is what he gave her. My mom has a schnauzer and she feeds her a smaller cup 2 times a day. I used to have a male collie as well though, they don't get very big. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. Also Kit_Kat suggested worms, no disrespect at all, it is a good suggestion, but if your dog has worms it will come out in his poo.

The rationale at the back of that's within the dermis. A puppy's dermis has average oils which can be eliminated whilst he's bathed. They take roughly 4 days to go back. She gets dry, flaky dermis if washed greater than as soon as each 3 or 4 weeks. I'd maintain the baths for whilst she will get messy, so you do not have got to have a soiled, pungent puppy strolling across the condo till it is nontoxic to wash her once more. However. If she must get any type of cleansing or chemical fabric of any type on her dermis, do NOT hesitate to wash her. Run water, simply water, over her for no less than twenty mins and speak to the vet immediately. Chemically burned dermis is far, a lot worse than dry dermis.

Has he been checked for worms? I think you should be sure that is not the problem, and ask the vet about his diet. All dog food bags tell you how much to feed your pet. Try giving him a little more and see if he is hungry? Which is another sign of worms. Take a stool sample to the office and sometimes they will only charge you for the test. $12.00 or so I think.
Good Luck to you and get a book on how to care for your breed of dog. They are very helpful with all kinds of information.

My vet said 2-3 cups ( 8oz ) of food a day is fine, My dog is very lean and he said that some dogs are just skinny and if you feed them that much you have nothing to worry about

Lets say you walk him twice a day. Feed him after his walks. Has he been tested for worms? The reason to feed after walks is it helps food digest better.

I own a three year old male border collie if I can help you in any way let me know

you should check on the back of the bag of dog food. it should say how much your dog is suppose to eat. because it is a collie and is full of energy you should give him a lot of exercise. if you give him a lot of exercise yu can give him a snack here and there. on the other hand it could be tapeworm. tapeworm starts out very small and eats what you eat. as days pass it will get bigger and bigger. you can tell if you have tapeworm if youre getting thinner and still weight the same. the only way to get tapeworm out is by lactose. lactose is dairy products. make your dog drink milk or other dairy products and the worm will move its way up to the throat. but you should check with the vet first.

Instead of giving him that. Give him 1 1/2 cups for breakfast and dinner. And 1 cup for lunch. Also if they look skinny, just remember they have a lot of fur so maybe they are good with their weight. But if he starts gaining a ton of weight and starts to put a lot of weight on, then take him back to his other diest because it is better to be underweight than over. Being over weight for anything/anyone is equal to having cancer.
