I think we are all curious about how we came to be so we try to find explanations in our creator or all around us :) no instincts to it just curiosity!

Soul has survival value even though the mind may reject survival. The soul is an acquirement as we move through our material life we make decision which have eternal values this is soul development. Even for the ones who choose not to take part soul is being acquired for nothing that has eternal value is ever lost. Though eternal life is not accepted my some the soul continues on through the Spirit and is passed on to another worthy personality as credit in life. Just why we have at birth enough credit to survive if we do not reject survival.

It is inbuilt in us to seek that understanding.
I personally believe that we were created in the image of God to be in a relationship with God. The drive to find out who we are and where we came from is the drive to fullfill the purpose of our creation and to be in fellowship with God. It is same sense of fulfilment that person gets when they are using their natural talents (sport, music art etc) the fulfillment comes from doing what you were created to do.
This is why it allways comes back to religfion. whetehr we like it or not we are spiritual beings. Even when communists tried to eliminate religion it seemed to grow even faster.
You may try to deny it but basically your were created by God and you miss him.

Man creates religions, but He created us. We are His religion, as a parent devotes themselves to their children, how much moreso He? Who we are is more discovered as we know our Creator, One on one. Then time isn't wasted. Isaiah 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired His understanding is inscrutable.
The best word I can give is His :)

There are psychologist who argue that it is a psycholgical need. See Maslow's hierarchy of needs. For a great read on the subject read Victor Frankels "Man's Search for Meaning."

Because God has put the knowledge of Himself in every man so that none would have an excuse not to believe in Him.

Because we are never satisfied with who we are. Sometimes I think we never know our purpose because we are hoping that it will be something extraordinary, It may be very simple if we look at what we have and what needs to be taken care of.

It's in us to want to know where we came from (besides our parents for the smarty pants out there!) It's instinct and I do think religion is an attempt to figure it all out.
