National Guardsmen on the U.S./Mexico border

They are armed, but their ridiculous orders are to cut and run when they encounter trouble. Out here in Arizona a recent incident caused quite a stir: The Guard ran into some Mexican drug runners. Rather than shooting / apprehending them they ran back to their shack and radioed in to Mommy that there were some really bad men out there. In the fallout all the politicians said it was a good policy, ignoring the obvious question as to why they were there if they didn't have any authority. The answer, of course, is that they are there for show.

I live in a border town on the California/Mexico border, and there are some National Guard here helping out the border patrol. What people don't know is that most of these troops (at least in my town) are totally superfluous. They are mostly out digging ditches and moving rocks, NOT helping with what they were originally were supposed to be here for. So, no you don't need a gun to dig a ditch. AND the type of "soldiers" that are put on this duty are not the type of person I'd ever trust with a gun. All they are doing is driving around drunk and disrupting my community.

Not unarmed but grossly under armed. All of our home defenses are suffering because of the illegal and immoral war in Iraq. A war which the majority of the country and the world believe we should leave.

They are not armed with standard military rifles, however many do carry handguns...Generally they are not in positions in which they would need a firearm
