I know someone who keeps getting a recurring dream about stairs. It is either about going up or down stairs and she gets a really bad feeling. What does this mean? Does it mean something bad will happen soon about stairs?

I believe we are all the people and symbols in our dreams. So the stairs aren't literal stairs, they are representative of something. Your friend is the only one who really knows what they represent to her.

I would guess maybe they mean an obstacle or something that drains her energy?

Do you know where the stairs are? Are they in her house or at her job? That could provide some clues about what the obstacle is.

I'll check back and see if you post more details, but basically your friend needs to ask herself what the symbols represent to her and what's going on in her life right now that reflects the dream.

Going up stairs can represent making progress towards an intended goals. Each "step" of a stair case can represent something nessary to get to the next step in succession. Also, going down can represent the opposite. You are headed backwards and each step you take is something which helps you go further backwards.

According to the activation-synthesis theory of dreams, the dream probably has no meaning at all. (Sorry, that may not be what you wanted to hear.)

Although dreams are influenced by our thoughts throughout the course of the day, this does not mean they are special messages to us that we should carefully consider.

Here's one perspective:

"Activation Synthesis Theory is a neurobiological theory of dreams, put forward by James Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley in 1977, which states that dreams are a random event caused by firing of neurons in the brain. This random firing sends signals to the body's motor systems, but because of a paralysis that occurs during REM sleep, the brain is faced with a paradox. It synthesizes a narrative by drawing on memory systems in an attempt to make sense of what it has experienced."
