Am I right that The UKC is playing a big part in the declining AKC registrations?

Okay this is my last question for this month. I will be back from my vacation in about two weeks.

To Goldengal's question:

Yes, I know it has been going on for years but why are people choosing UKC over AKC?

Okay that wasn't the best wording "taking over" but the fact is AKC registrations are not like they use to be.

Goldengal,

UKC is the United Kennel Club. The KC is the Kennel Club of Great Britain.

What Dane Lover said. UKC is a very reputable registry that has been around for about a century just like AKC. I really don't see many cases ever where people register their dogs in UKC instead of AKC -- if anything I see where people will register in both. This is in contrast with all of the other less reputable registries (like CKC Continental, NOT Canadian, Kennel Club) which get business because of all the people who want to buy "registered" pups but don't realize that there's more to registration than official looking papers that say "Registered!".

I don't have any data on this, but my gut feeling is that those dozens of junk registries are not so much taking business away from AKC as they are taking the place of all the puppies that people used to get for free from newspaper ads (which no longer exist in most parts of the country thanks to the efforts of voluntary spay/neuter programs) with carelessly bred pups that people pay a grand or two for. Now that people have the idea that registrations mean something special, all of these registries have leapt in to fill that perceived need.

Not sure where you get that AKC registrations are declining because that certainly isn't true.Over the past few years even more dog breeds have been added to the list of recognized breeds by the AKC.
UKC has been around for many years and have worked along as the second largest registry. They aren't a threat nor are they "taking over".
People are not chosing UKC over AKC..actually many people are chosing to register and show in both registries.
There are also AKC judges that also judge UKC as well.

United Kennel Club (UKC) was not created to register mixes. It is a very reputable registry and has been around pretty much as long as the AKC. In the beginning it registered mainly hounds and sporting breeds. It has since expanded. The breed standard for those dogs recognized by both them and AKC is the same. The same parent club standards apply. In the show world they are more oriented towards the family and owner handling instead of profesional handlers. Just like AKC the criteria for registration is the same..both parents must be registered in order for the resulting pups to be registered. Also UKC is more performance geared then it is conformation geared as far as promoting shows. They do recognize a few more breeds then AKC but that doesn't make them "better" or worse.
They are not a scam registry nor are they byb/mill oriented any more then AKC.Like AKC they are a for profit registry.

I'm not quite sure what your asking about. Do you mean duel AKC/UKC registrations?? Or is it that UKC isn't reconizing the AKC registration of dogs?
What Tim is talking about has been going on for years. Is this what your asking about?

UKC is only in Britain not here in the states. If a dog is a prue bred with AKC registration then they can't choose to have it changed to UKC. The only way I know of having AKC and UKC is have duel regustrations. So the dog can be show in both countries.
Does this come close to what your asking???

Oh by the way have a great Vacation!! I'll look forward to your next question when you get back.

Frankly I think most people who know the AKC are tired of their shady registration practices and they know there are tighter restrictions in the UKC as well as the CKC (Canadian kennel club).
The UKC also recognizes more of the rare breeds and developing breeds quicker, and it can be aruged that, when compared side by side, the UKC standards trump the AKC standards.
The UKC is smaller, and that reason alone may contribute to people getting so tired of the AKC that they are bidding it fare thee well.

The AKC needs to revamp their registrations as well as breeder-kennel checks, because just about anyone can breed their dogs, even breed mutts, and as long as the parents are purebred, the AKC will register them. They do it online, and there is scarcely any checking up on the puppies or parents or the people breeding them.
This is how Parti-Poodles and White Goldens are registered, not to mention Yorkies below the breed standard in weight, among other faults.
Backyard breeders, even puppy mills, are able to slip through the cracks and register their dogs.

Is Mr. Menaker even listening to the members in his club?

There was a United Kennel Club created in the United States to register dogs that the AKC would not accept, like Puggles and other mixes. It's the easy way to get 'official papers' for your mutt so you can charge lots of money for the pups.

CKC is taking over I think more than UKC.

UKC is ***NOT*** "taking over"!
So NO,you are NOT "right"!

The PUPPYMILLERS have discovered that they are CHEAPER & will register CRAP-including AKC's LIMITED reg!!-*&* that the vast majority of the feeble-minded population can't tell QUALITY from CRAP anyway.
UKC's JUDGES can't EITHER!!!

CKC & APRI & all the other FAKE/SCAM registries are the same.
