how come when ever you lye to a cop they say " why do you insult my intelligence?"?

i was just asking. i watch cops alot and they seem to say that often.

like on the show "cops"... they seem to say it often

because criminals think we are morons. but once your around liars 8 or 12 hours a day 40 hours a week, its pretty easy to spot a liar. but also cops is a TV show, and they like it when the cops on cops are harsh, its makes for good ratings.

We like phrases like that and " I wasn't born yesterday" and "dont you think I have heard that excuse 1000 times". It is better to say that then say "you are a liar" or "you are stupid" as that would be unprofessional and might escalate the situation. Basically we are saying you must think I'm stupid if you think I believe that and are letting you know that we do not believe your story and hoping you will come up with something more believable, like the truth.

The general public would say those lines all the time too if their daily lives constantly involved trying to sort out the lies from the truth when deciding how to handle an incident. Most officers with a bit of experience are pretty good at detecting lies whether it be based on actions or just because we have heard that same story over and over again (like the ever so common "just a couple beers" when asking how much someone has had to drink). I guess that is what is meant by dong insult my intelligence, basically I know better.

To the poster (phlada64) who said that when asked by the cop if she was under any stress and she said "I am now" that is actually the kind of statement that I think an officer would like (at least I would). It is very truthful and kind of funny and would probably have earned you a warning from me as well (depending on the original violation. We like a little humor now and then and that certainly beats someone making excuses for themselves or complaining about being pulled over.

Because they usually already know what the person did, and lying about it is an insult to their intelligence.

For example:
"I only had two beers." And the person can't even stand up.
"I didn't know how fast I was going." Yeah OK, sure.
"I didn't do it." And 10 witnesses will be standing there pointing at the guy.

Plus, it's nicer than saying "You're a liar."

Ok what would you say in this situation:

Cop arrests a guy for traffic warrant. During the search cop finds a baggie of cocaine in the offenders pants pocket. Offender says "These are not my pants!"

Laugh if you must, but I have actually heard that line twice.

Maybe you insulted his intelligence by telling an obvious lie. Ride along with you local law enforcement for a month and listen to the lame excuses and bald faced lies people tell. You will understand why they say it.

Because they can? A cop stopped me on the way to work and I was shook. He asked me if I was under any stress. I told him I was now. He didnt like that. But-he didnt give me a ticket-just a warning. Great-I could have had a heart attack for a warning.

When someone tells me a completely outrageous lie, I mean really out there, I might turn to my partner and lift the hair off my forehead and ask him "do you see stupid written accross my forehead?"

You can get someone standing in front of a huge piece of graffiti with the paint can still in his/her hands, paint all over hands and shoes, and he/she will look you right in the eye and say "I didn't do it". Can you see how "why do you insult my intelligence" would fit in this kind of situation?

I don't usually say that, I usually say; "You're full of S.H.I.T" Or "Who do you think you're Bullshitting?" See Like This; DUI suspect- "Geeze Officer, I didn't see you behind me with the blue lights or hear the Siren, The reason I sped up was because I thought you were a buddy of mine that I owe 50 bucks to, I wasn't trying to get away from you HONEST"- Officer-(now listen close) "REALLY? Buddy, You're so full of S.H.I.T your eyes are Brown!!" (See? works great! much more impact than "don't insult my intelligence") S.H.I.T is a very important word in Law Enforcement.

because most of them also have street knowledge also and can smell a liar a mile away, so you insult the intelligence when you get caught in the lie. They can tell, also by body language etc....
