i use to baby sit all the time what worked for me was i would go to the doller store and grab a few cheap toys puzzles water balloons games coloring books pope rs mabey even play doe or cars any thing like that i would put it in a back pack and once week i would change out the toys with something new ....the kids loved it !!!

also i would do arts and crafts with the kids ...if you get a color book have the kids color there fave pic then cut it up into a puzzle then see if thay can put it together you can also bring over a empty coke bottle and put water food coloring and cooking oil in it super glue the cap on and you got a fun science toy also if you bring over a toy that makes noise or a wind up clock that has a load tick to it you can play hide and seek with the kids just hide it the kids will have to get quiet to hear it and thay will look for a wile to find it

if the mom and dad dont mind you cooking make a no bake snack .....let the kids help pudding jello celery with raisins let the kids cook and help you clean kids love that

just a safety tip with any thing you bring over ...DO NOT BRING ANYTHING THAT CAN FIT IN A TOILET PAPER TUBE KIDS CAN CHOKE !!! AND WITH THE THREE YEAR OLD BE CARE FULL

but if you make it fun thay will have fun

ask the 9 year old to make you a list of places she wants to visit (if you can't drive yet, they'd have to be wlaking distance, or you'd have to get a parents or older sibling to help you) and go to those places! Most of the time if you tlak to the parents ahead of time and tell them that the kids want to go swimming at the community pool, they'll leave you guys the money to go! Parents want their kids to have fun!

Always winning ideas: forts (sheets and clothes pins, baby! good for ALL ages), making cookies (or since it is summer, popsicles by freezing juice), and planning a long-term activty, like putting on a skit for the parents, or creating a succsessful lemonade stand. These are all things I did with a 5 year old and an 8 year old last summer!

With the big age difference it could be hard to entertain them both at once but there are some fun outdoor acitivities that they BOTH will enjoy.....

-Chalk Art (using big sidewalk chalks)
-Create a hop scotch on sidewalk/driveway with chalk
-Water balloon toss into a bucket
-Body art (use washable Crayola markers, have each take turns drawing "tattoos" on body and then wash off with hose)
-Scavenger hunt (can be done indoors on rainy day)
-Play pretend camp-out (make S'mores, roast some marshmallows with supervision), create a tent with a blanket, sing some camp songs
-Make homemade playdough (recipes can be found online)

Hope that helps!

Bring some toys and books from your house, that are different than their own... kids, even if they have a plethora of toys, will ALWAYS go for ones that are new and different than the ones they're used to.

And since you're going to be there long-term, you can do activities that are more drawn out... maybe ask their parents if you can plant a simple flower garden or herb garden, and every few days you go out and tend to it, picking weeds and watering

Plan activities based on their ages. A three year old can be super entertained but smaller things like coloring and playing with blocks. Keep things like that handy but also keep older toys handy too. Good luck!
