Yes, of course. Most churches around here where I live, several denominations, are very mindful of the widows in the community. They help in lots of ways (not just widows, but the elderly, and shut-ins). The kinds of things done are numerous...it's according to their needs. All the churches in our community work together to provide Meals on Wheels, a service that provides meals that are taken to the home 3 times a week. Individual people and classes within our church adopt people to take care of and check on regularly to see if they need anything and if they are alright. Our church provides transportation to Dallas for cancer patients or anyone who can't take themselves. When there is any particular need of a widow or anyone else, our church supplies whatever is needed. We do give some people money at the discretion of the pastor or deacons, if it is needed. We have a generous congregation and if someone needs a car, air conditioner, refrig., wash. machine, etc. it can be announced (not the person's name, but the need) and it usually gets donated annonymously. People within our church take it upon themselves to kind of adopt someone and visit them regularly to just provide friendship as well as material or service type needs.
I thought that's what all churches do......help those who can't help themselves. The Bible gives a special mandate to provide for the widows and orphans. If the church is not doing this, then shame on them. The church is a family and we take care of each other, just like a family does. We know each other, and fellowship with each other, we know when there is illness or any other distress among our members. We have a daily prayer list that is e-mailed to members and through that we can know if we need to go to someone in the hospital, or home, or just call them or whatever. If the church doesn't take care of someone's need as a whole, then an individual covers it. It all gets taken care of through God's provision. And it goes without saying our church, as well as other denominations in our town, help outsiders regularly, also. We help people stranded for whatever reason, we have a food pantry for families that need food, we have a clothing room full of all sizes of clothes for those in need, and we have other services like helping them connect with other resources in our town.

I belonged to a small church that was filled with some of the most giving people I have ever known, not just to widows but even to a college student who was short on his tuition. Now I am in a larger church because of moving and they have helped many individuals. An elderly widow was given a trailer, and with all the talent in the church, an older trail or was made into a home with new carpeting, furniture and even the drapes and curtains. I have been at a service right before Christmas that the Pastor and his wife invited all single mothers to come forward and they were given a gift of one hundred dollars. Many wept, and I know that many children had a much nicer Christmas morning.

I've been in lots of churches and yes they do help widows. It's usually with things like transportation (because they are often elderly), food, housework or yard work. One of our church men mows an older woman's lawn and weeds for her every week. I've never known a widow who asked for or needed cash.

I do know churches who do this the form the help is in depends on the needs. They repaired one woman's roof for her. i have also heard of a situation where they helped with property taxes. One woman I knew had no family or money when she died the church paid for her funeral expenses. they had already had people going in to help her with household tasks for some time. It all depends on the needs. The church I currently go to when I go has a thing every fall where any single woman can make an appointment to get their car inspected for winter for free at a garage one of the guys owns. Its great! the one year I didn't go I had trouble 3 days later. :(

Our Catholic St Vincent de Paul in parishes helps widows but they almost never give cash because the cash is usually misspent. They often give vouchers, food or furniture.
