don't get me wrong, if you have the desire to enlist and serve our country, your a hero and a great asset to society and freedom.

But personally I can't see why an 18 year old kid right out of high school would join the military. I mean you get sent off from everyone you love, are surronded by 99% males (and you can't join if your gay, so there's no advantage to this either way)
and you don't get to experiance all the partying and general beligerent drunkenness of college.

Why would a young man in today's world of alcohol, sex, and general fun choose to give up a set number of years of their life for the military?

If you had served in the military, what drove you to do it?

Well if you like me, i was right out of highschool when i enlisted in the Army. I have been in the service for 11 years now and i wouldn't trade it for the world. I have had 7 overseas assignments and four combat tours. The United States Army was my first real job and it has been wounderful. Usually someone with a type (A) personality joins the service, and only the ones that are not afrade, joing the INFANTRY. Being a front line soldier is the best thing in the world. Belive it or not. You can still do everything in the army that you can do as a civilian. The penalties are alot stifferbut the partying still go's on more than ever. You get paid 24 hrs a day 7 days a week no matter what. you get your college paid for and you recieve federal bennifits while your in, and if you retire you get to keep all the privilages you had in the service for the rest of your life. Looking for responsibility and and a life time experiance. I recomend you join the United States Army and travel all over the wourld!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I served in the Army because it is the thing to do. Everyone should serve in the Military (or equivalent) or leave this country. If people are unwilling to be good citizens, go else where.
What incentives? Besides being a little more moral, learning discipline, learning responsibility, learning citizenship, having a chance to get a college education DURING as well as after separation, etc., And, sorry to say, there is a chance for "alcohol, sex, and general fun" in the military! If you are a civilian, you will probably go no where else; in the military, you have a chance to experience booze and sex in other countries!
And, yes, "gays" are allowed in the military. Remember: Don't ask, Don't tell!
Check where all the military goes, I am sure you can find a place you would like!

Im not a man by anymeans, but my fiancee is, and he has been in the Navy for about 5 years almost served 1 tour and was about to go on his second one until he got 2 herniated discs, Anyways, you can still enjoy the partying, and sex, just at different ports Around the world. You get awesome benifits, and it gets you ready for the real world, and like you said, the honor is a big plus. People will be looking up to you, you will be peoples hero! The military is a great experiance, it helps you be more Independent, more responsable, and women love a man in uniform!

I hope this helps!

Well, I'm not in the military and when my friends join up I'm always worried they're making a mistake... but that bias aside, lets look at your question.
The only alternative to the military you offer is college. Well, look at the statistics, bro--most people who join the military are poor. It offers them the chance to see the world, get a pension, get some kind of education (like free technical school, pretty much), have a reliable career... i.e. things that are not available to them otherwise.
Maybe, like me, 90-some percent of people in your graduating high school class went to college. But the whole country is not middle class, oh no.
So yeah, for some people the choices are a crappy job (or no job at all), or the military. Not college, or the military as you imply.

First of all, if you think that experiencing being drunk all the time, doing drugs, and doing who knows what else is the way to live... then you definitely are NOT for the military and you have some growing up to do. You definitely need to be mature, responsible, motivated, and a team player. You have peoples lives in your hand that you may need to defend. The good points of joining - training for free, housing, medical, retirement, physical fitness, travel and some for free, promotional opportunities, plus you get the satisfaction that you are doing something for your country - something positive.

I was raised to take pride in being an American and was taught that Freedom was not free and that everyone should give their fair share to be able to enjoy the rights we have as Americans. Even young people today can see that fact even after being brainwashed in our schools by Libby Professors and Teachers. To bad more Americans don't think that way, the Nation would be a hell of a lot better place!!!

there is plenty of incentive...a respectible job, gi bill, good pay, health care. how many 18 year olds not in the military have the opportunity for this?
oh, and the military is not 99% men, and they do have parties :)
