The new Passat Diesels are great, and I'm sure it'll be quick enough, even with the new DSG (Fancy auto box) it'll have the same sort of performance as a manual. I reckon the 2.0 170BHP would be a nice compromise on fuel and performance and I think you can even have it with AWD too.
The Audi A4 is a little smaller with the same size engine (Audi is VW)
I guess the Accord diesel might be worth a look at.

I personally wouldn't suggest an Avensis, they've been around and look a little dated - I've driven one and I didn't think it was all that - Each to their own though.

passat = Boring!! lol 4 door fast fun hey..... theres the obvious Evo or Scooby but they dont suit everyone. You seem to like german so why not a BMW 3 or 5 series which have mega diesel engines( 330d & 535d) or a C class merc. oh and dont forget the Audi A4. In the end it depends on how much money you have and how fast, "fast" needs to be.. it could range from a passat diesel to a BMW M5

Take a look at the Toyoto Auris 180D dont pass judgement until you have driven this wolf in sheeps clothing.Or the Avensis 180D beautifully built both of them here in Britain. The 180D is a 2200 diesel engine with Turbo charger. You will get a good deal on both. Before you go into hysterics try both.

How elegant! But - the one word which comes to mind is: TOYOTA. It will last longer than we will. And I think that is a quality that is good in a car. With elegance comes maintenance. With maintenance comes money. And more money. Transportation or headaches - ? Inquiring minds want to know. I want to know!
