The details of this is..I am deciding on leaving my job but I like it allot and the people are nice. However, I hit snag when I took a week off from being sick and since then I have been picked on because of it and every time someone brings up vacation time, I get the "don't even ask for vacation"? This has been said seriously and kiddingly but frankly I am upset and confused how my boss can be so frank. I have been here for over a year and I am eligible for a vacation after a year.
So I asked "stupidly" (as that was the look I got) if I could take vacation in Nov. That was shot down and then she said "I'll think about it and get back to me? She also said if I go on vacation that maybe there would be someone in my seat when I returned?? How should I take this...I take things personally as it is and being with them this long you become a second family..should I sit down and chat or give my two weeks?

Sincerely,
Hurt one.

Start looking around for another job. Get the other job, and then quit this one. Unless, of course, you like it well enough to not want to take vacations.

I had that same problem. One girl was asked what she intended to do while on vacation. She said she was going berry picking. Vacation was turned down because the boss said she had "insufficient reason for taking the time off."

I was entitled to 3 weeks per year, was usually able to get one week at a time. If I wanted a second week at that same time, you'd think I was killing someone. Imagine that! Wanting 2 of my 3 weeks at the same time!. I could sometimes take that 3rd week later in the year, but most of the time, I had to just sell it back.

It never got any better for me, & I was mighty, mighty glad when the company turned around and offered early retirement deals to older folk, like me. Was my boss ever mad about THAT! But, there was nothing he could do about it.

I don't think I would quit a job that you like just because the people are acting like idiots right now. Let things cool off for now, and do your work to the best of your ability.

People may be thinking you took a *vacation* while you were *sick* and as it was unscheduled, they had to take over for you. But that really should be between you and your boss.

Did you ask for the Nov vacation to test the boss, or do you have something planned? Either way, let things blow over and if you really have plans for November, then wait until a later date to re-request the time off.

Good luck.

Depends on what the company decides is "sick" time and what is "vacation" time. I worked for one that just classified it as either paid or unpaid time off, and you used your paid time first, regardless, and you earned the time by how long you worked. It seems like the company you work for has difficulty defining these things for you. If the policy is unclear then it's their fault and they shouldn't be so rude about it. However I would say you should be entitled to another week vacation since two weeks is normal after 1 year employ. That's the least, but you should have also earned sick days.
I don't know, either ask them to clarify their policy on sick and vaction time, or find a new job. You should be punished in anyway for being sick (even if weren't it's not there business)

Your boss sounds awful -- sort of like my boss. There are those who take it almost personally when someone stays out of work for any reason. It's almost like they treat you like you stole from them. You took one week off in an entire year and now you want a week's vacation which is completely reasonable. The way the other employee's say "don't even ask" should tell you that this is what you should expect from this boss as long as you stay there. Find a higher paying job and get out.

what kind of contract/work place agreement did you sign when joining up with this company? go through it see what the company's policy on sick pay/holiday is. I'm sure if you went on holiday and came back and your job was taken you could start some kind of legal action as every one even casual employees are entitled to holidays and sick days off.
it sounds like your boss is taking advantage of your good nature once you have gone over all the paper work and gotten all the facts on your holiday entitlements go see your boss explain how much you enjoy working for this company how you would hate to leave this job but make sure you explain that no matter how much you would hate to leave if your not getting what you entitled to then your going to hand in your notice.
