Have a 14 year-old non-housebroken outside dog who is almost completely deaf and not neutered that I would like to be able to bring inside. Housebreaking would seem almost impossible, any tips?

First of all, thank you for bring the dog inside. At his age, they need a little more comfort.

Have you tried crate training?

Get a crate (most every pet store has them) that is just big enough for your dog to stand and turn around in.

Put some treats in the crate and invite your dog to go in (do not close the door) for the next few days drop treats into the crate, and praise your dog each time he goes in. After a few days close the door behind him and give him some treats. Keep lengthening the amount of time the dog is in the crate until he can be in there for 8 hours (No longer than 8)

Dogs will not go potty in their sleep area. So after a few hours of him being in the crate, let him out and Immediately take him outside. Little by little the dog will understand that he goes outside.

It works! Good luck!

A lot of times dogs that have been mostly outside dogs don't pee in the house but this dog is pretty old and may no be able to control it. For that old you may just want to keep him on tile and deal with it......he is old and half deaf so it's nearly impossible.

Oh dear.

Yes, it will be very hard. After all, the dog is old and as you say, mostly deaf.

You'll want to neuter him first, so he won't try to mark territory inside your house.

Reward and praise him when he does his business outside. Do the opposite when he does it inside. In fact, you may even want to use a crate to help with his training.

Good luck!

Get a series of shows called "the dog whisperer", it's a fantastic resource of unbelievably effective training tips to help Ole' Zeek with the adjustment.

Good on ya for bringing the old boy indoors.

I train dogs adn the best way that i found is when they start to use the bathroom just yell really loud to say no and take them outside RIGHT AWAY and wait for them to go. if you have to clean anything up put it in one spot in the yard so they get used to where it goes. Also take them ouside every 2-3 hours (that your home) so they dont feel like they absolutely HAVE to go and they will get used to going outside and not feel the need to go inside.

If your 14 yr old is healthy, then he is already mostly house broken. Bring him in the house and watch him. He will sniff and look at you when he needs to go.... Then you have to rush to help him get outside.

However, if he is feeling his age, has arthritis, has bladder problems, then he can't control himself... so be sure to clean up any mistakes with vinegar.

Deafness and neutered should not matter... except that yelling, "NO!" won't help :-)

I don't think you will have much luck. Dogs are creatures of habit and like to go in the same place. If you can get him into the habit of going in one place in the yard it might work. But I honestly don't think it will be easy.

Newsflash you won't. My sister-in-law had a 17 year old house dog it died last year till she was advised by her vet to put her out of her misery. Before that she had some special diapers she wore. Don't laugh thats probably your best option.

Have you ever heard the saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks?" You can't teach him how. He knows so much it's, like, not possible. I would try a "doggie diaper." They're seXXy!
