But it's imperceptible with the naked eye until the cumulative affect adds up over years. That's why people warn you about cancerous "cumulative effects!"

Unless you spend some quality time in the sun at least once a week, the tan will fade. It depends on your skin type, but if I get a tan it usually starts to noticeably fade after two weeks.

To answer your question you first have to understand why the skin tans. When the sun is contact with the skin it stimulates the natural melanin in your skin which is trying to protect your skin from harmThe melanin creates the tanned look but as soon as you come out of the sun the melanocyte cells switch off and the tan begins to fade. However if you keep doing this sometimes these melanocytes do not "switch off" and thats why you see people with dark spots and uneven patchy skin-this is evidence of deeper sun damage.
As we get older the skin gets more and more used to this and thats why the skin tans quicker as you get older but also why the skin on an older "sun worshipper"tends to look leathery.
The other downside is that the collagen and elastin in the skin breaks down and that results in saggy skin-so keep out of the sun and protect with at least an SPF 15 daily if you want to keep looking young.

Tans fade. People with naturally "tan" or dark skin have their skin fade if they do not spend time in the sun. (My wife is a Filipina.) Some people do retain at least some of the tan; all my life I have had what used to be called dark complexion; right now, I am darker than my wife!

Tans will always fade. This is because of they way that your skin cells die off and are replaced by new skins cells underneath. This is why 90% of household dust is made up of dead skin cells.

The best way to look after your tanned skin is to regularly exfoliate with a gentle exfoliant. This also means that most of the dead skin will be washed away down your bath/shower plug hole and not sprinkled around your house. This will also stop your tan looking blotchy, patchy or dirty.

When you exfoliate, you should always moisturise to look after and nourish the new skin exposed underneath.

"your tan will fade" is a remark used to denote that your skin is shedding the burnt layer.

If you have a tan then your skin is burnt, your skin naturally sheds top layers continuously anyway, only you notice it more because of the 'tan' colour. The secret is to try not to burn the lower layers, as this will cause your skin to dry up and wrinkle quicker and You'll be an old wrinkly before your time.

I go to a tanning salon (yes, I know the reports on tanning say it's bad) and to keep my tan, I need to go every 7 to 10 days or so. It depends on your skin type as well. People with naturally darker skin will retain their tan longer (and will tan faster) than fair skinned people. Also, if you keep your skin hydrated, you will be able to keep your tan a little longer than if you do not. This means drinking lots of water and applying lots of moisture-rich lotion. If you visit a tanning salon, they will be able to tell you how long you will keep your tan based on your skin tone, etc. and most will do it without you even signing up to tan.
