Because they enjoy the heat. Some dogs will lay out in the sun even if it is 100 degrees outside. Don't believe the idiots that say it is because they want the vitamins. Many dogs have such thick fur that the sun never reaches skin. Dogs do not know about vitamins! There are dangers in laying out in the sun. They can get skin cancer. They can get cataracts and it can also lead to clouding of the eye lens. My dogs do it and I don't stop them.

My dog will also lay in the hot sun. I don't know the real reason, but I can speculate:
1. It feels good and induces sleep.
2. I think that dogs can generate both Vitamin D and Vitamin C when their skin is exposed to the sun.
3. The sun helps to clean their coat, just like drying clothes in the sun.

My dog will also get up and go into the shade to sleep, after a few hours. I think it is time related, because I have seen him get at at the same time, whether the time is 90 degrees or 80 degrees.

The sun is just as important to animals as it is humans. They soak in the sun rays and the vitamins it has to offer.

When they are in air-conditioned houses most of the time, the sun helps their joints just as it helps ours. Their joints and muscles need heat too.
