A modern society should be one that embraces all people, and does not discriminate. The society you speak of sounds completely outdated and ignorant.

No one Should be barred from Immigrating to the US unless the are a threat to us. I think you are under the terrible misconception that Muslim people are a threat to our well being. The real question is NOT "how can people who live by 7th century standards possibly fit into a modern society?" because who really cares, it would be their problem to fit in or not right. The real question is what about their religion makes you so uncomfortable that you wouldn't want them here? Is it perhaps because you don't know anything about their religion? Or maybe because you have been lead to believe that their faith teaches violence or hate (horribly false)? I hope you educate yourself on people outside your bubble before you decide if you want them gone or not.

That's a strange question. What is a traditional Muslim? I was born in Australia, my parents are Syrian and I am proud to be a Muslim. I have a PhD as well. I live in Germany and my husband is a German who converted to Islam before I met him. This may not seem traditional to you, but I am a 'traditional' Muslim. Why? Because I try to follow the pillars of Islam and lead a peaceful existence. I think the big issue here is that most people seem to confuse religion with traditions and cultures.

John, you have a very valid question. Who is America and Americans today? We have become so tolerant of so many different cultures that we don't realize that we have diminished the very one we had from the beginning. Yes we have a melting pot in the United States and we had people from all over to become citizens of this country, we were founded on it. The key word is "United" in the same speech and belief in America. So we have changed that attitude about us and with the fact we are humanitarians by our very nature in this country and opened the doors wide open. Opened to what? I have to ask, why is it that people come here to change laws in this country and don't have what it takes to do that very change where they came from? Most people that are screaming stop picking on the Muslims or whomever, don't even had a belief system within themselves. Its a dangerous attitude to believe we are going to mix well, like you said by very different standards culturally, and have a good outcome. Why? because we are sharing the same backyard, not one that is across the ocean, and the very fact that they refuse to seriously accept what we stand for The United States of America. I urge people to openly study the true "root" of some cultures and tell me you think the same. I live in California, last week students at a high school took down the American flag and put theirs up and ours upside down......people who stand for everything dont stand for anything.

Yes. If someone does not believe in tolerance or the separation of mosque and state, they should not be allowed to immigrate into a secular country. Same to people who believe in murder or sympathize with terrorism.

Countries are not stable, but dynamic. A country must set immigration policies that protect its citizens from political fracture. I fully support freedom of speech and tolerance from citizens, but I think a nation shoots itself in the foot if it leaks in thousands of people who have no respect for modern society.

I think there should be a moratorium on it for awhile until the US can deal with their immigration problems, and during the war on terror, and Europe can deal with taking in Muslim immigrants without having to grant them Sharia law.

These aren't the grateful immigrants of yesteryear.
