Well, persecution is a really strong word, and in the West it's not something we really suffer. But in the East, it's appalling. Go to www.prisoneralert.com to see.
In the West, it's more that people make so many assumptions about what "Christians" are like, and treat us with disdain, at best. But we're all individuals, just like you are. It's seen as uncool to be Christian. The sardonic, cool people rag on God. That's just how it's developed.
Even on a tiny scale, once this question has been answered by everyone, scroll through, and you'll see the Christians have been thumbed-down much, much more - both here and in all the other questions. In and of itself, inconsequential, but indicative of how we're seen.

Christians in the United States have no clue what persecution really is--we're not being killed, being denied jobs or homes because of our faith, nothing at all like what's happening in countries such as North Korea. Check out the first set of links below for blog entries I wrote awhile back about what persecution really is and the difference between that and the mere disagreements Christians in developed countries have.

Is there persecution ?
on the one hand one reality is that "when a man's ways are right with the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him"
on the other hand another reality is "all who desire to live a godly life will be persecuted" advice to TImothy
God gives enough grace for each day
and most will experience both peace and opposition with others at various times
no matter the kind of pressures they face.
today between roughly 100,000 and 150,000 people in the world die every year for their faith. Groups such as Voice of the Martyrs have their stories.
Of course there are many types of persecution... peer pressure... work opportunity... social pressures... in history many people had it rougher but behind it all God is more than a master jeweler who designs the trouble, blows and joys to carve us into beauticul gems for his crown and glory

All the time and all over the world. Just because you don't personally hear about it does not mean its not happening.
1. Dominican Republic - a man is trying to steal a Church's K-32 property
2. Eritrea - Christians are facing many pressures because of their faith in Jesus as their Savior
3. Guatemala - an evangelical pastor was murdered behind his pulpit
And the list goes on

Definitely not in the United States, because of the constitutional protections all faiths enjoy. In a number of Muslim nations and China, however, there's no doubt that they are being persecuted.

It's been my experience that the modern Christian interpretation of religious "persecution" is when a non-believer, while in the process of resisting conversion, says something mean to a Christian.

Not in America. Some of them feel like they're being persecuted because less and less they're able to step all over separation of church and state by siphoning their preferred brand of deity into the government and government controlled entities.
