Everytime I get behind a vehicle that has the flag draped across the bumper or dragging in the exhaust fumes I want to pop a gasket. I am aware of the correct ways to fly a flag so please let's not get into that. Just answer this...Are people who abuse the flag just "fair weather" patriots or well meaning albeit misguided citizens.

I hate hate hate to see a flag flown wrong. I have called in places that have tattered flags to let them know about official flag burning ceremonies usually done by a veterans organization Hell once I even told someone their neighbor had the flag hung backwards (I was a delivery driver) if you are patriotic enough to fly it do it right. It is usually not done intentionally but a real flag (not a bandanna/patch etc) they just don't know how it's done especially hung from a porch, inside window or like in stores where it is viewed from both ways. (Field of blue to the left folks)
That said I do believe that if it is your flag you can do with it what you want. Just don't mess with MY flag. While I don't believe in desecrating the flag if it's your flag you bought and paid for go for it but if it's mine you better not F.... with it .

So to answer your question Misguided albeit good patriots

Happy Flag Day (June 14th)

It is worse to fly it incorrectly.

These are *normally* well meaning albeit misguided citizens that just need a little education, which you can provide.

There are also some that use the flag as a fashion statement because it is popular these days. Those need some "wall to wall counseling" if you know what I mean.

And "speck" if you consider the "living embodiment of the constitution" to be inconsequential, why don't you move to a place where you don't have those protections that we have defended with our blood, sweat and bruises. I've served and sacrificed in both extreme heat and cold enough to have it flown correctly by those that I've protected.

I think most people who fly the flag on their vehicle are well meaning people. I don't think they believe they are abusing the flag. I believe they are showing their support for the USA. No, I don't think they are "fair weather" patriots. Since most flags that I've seen are flown on the radio antenna and not in exhaust fumes or draped across a bumper, I'm not sure what you saw.

Most Americans don't know proper flag flying etiquette. In fact a few months ago I saw some people who were flying the flag at half staff just lower it when it should have been raised to full then lowered this was irritating to me and I said something. You should to if you see the flag being mistreated most of the time it is through ignorance and they need to be taught the proper way and respect of the flag

You do set the bait on the fish...

I agree with you. I don't like it on civilian clothing, vehicles and non-regulation displays.

What I dislike more is the modern protocol of lowering it to half-staff (a mast is on a ship) when anybody popular dies. I think that honor should be reserved for those who served their country, not their wallets.

Today's trivia. Your flag pole is 100 feet high. How far will the flag travel to get to half-staff?

It is worse not to fly the flag at all. I feel as long as you R.E.S.P.E.C.T. the American flag you should be able to place it on your bumper, hang it off your window, or fly it out side your home. It's great to see other people who are proud to be Americans!
As a Minutemen at rallies it makes me tear up with all the flags flying. When an illegal drags in across the ground my feelings are 180 degrees the other way!!

Well-meaning but misguided citizens : to rubbish your country by abusing the flag is crude and undiscriminating unless you happen to live in Nazi Germany or suchlike - where, of course, no such abuse of the flag would be possible anyway. Protest against US or UK foreign policy, capitalism or whatever but don't buck the whole country.

I fly my flag upside on Dec 12, to protest the supreme court's theft of the presidency for bush. This riled up neighbors in my townhouse community, actually had some banging on my door demanding an explanation. When I gave it to them, they sputtered. Then ignored me in the neighborhood from then on. Whew.

I don't like seeing the flag in the rain, tho apparently this is okay now (?) and I don't like seeing the flag in the dark (MCdonald's is allowed to do this, I guess) and I don't like seeing the flag sewn onto jeans' behinds.

But, it's a piece of cloth, so I ponder things a moment, then move on. The state of our nation is far more interesting and important than any given bozo's flag display.

This is largely subjective, but I suspect displaying the flag incorrectly would likely get more negative attention than not displaying it at all. It gets my attention (and subsequently upsets me to an extent) more when the flag is mishandled than when it's not displayed at all in an area where I know it should be.

If someone is willfully and wrongfully, maliciously, disrespecting ;the flag then they should be ticketed or jailed.... if they have good intentions, it's good to show support for the country, even if there may be a little discrepancies... we do need to show support for our country...
