Depending on where you are in your vocal training you will be doing anything from vocalizing to performing musical works. Typically they involve 30 min to 1 hr. sessions that start out with simple vocalize and breathing exercises. These exercises will consist of scales, range extensions, and deep breathing concentration. After you are "warmed-up" the vocal instructor will most likely work with you on some vocal literature usually (if you are on the beginner lever) from a book called 24 Italian Songs and Arias (you will get to know this book quite well). At the end of the lesson your instructor may have you do some warm-down exercises. Again some light vocal humming nothing to strain the voice.
As you progress on you might have different instructors who will have you do many different things that range from lying on the floor with a book on your stomach (helps with posture and breathing control), singing with all vowels, singing while holding your tongue, and many other seemingly ridiculous things. Some teachers will require you to perform some may not. Some teachers will have you dissect the piece that you are working on. You might have to translate literal word translation, find out background information, and historic importance. If you are planning on working your voice you also need to discover the importance of practice (if all my vocal teachers could hear me now!). You will want to plan on practicing at least 1 hour per day. Practicing will follow your normal lesson routine most of the time. If you know that you will not be able to do a full practice then at least warm-up and vocalize for about 15 min.
If you are serious about music and voice then lessons will be a very rewarding experience. If you are trying to correct a vocal fault or train your voice to project then you will gain a lot from the training.

Exactly what the man above said. The first day might start out with you doing alot of warm-ups so that they can figure out what your voice range is. Then they might ask what you want to accomplish by taking this. Maybe start with a genre of music you prefer then try to expand it. Alot of excersises like watching your self sing in the mirror or placeing a phone book on your stomach. Just think of it as a class for school.

They teach you how to warm up your "machine" to get the optimum performance. They work on developing your range and music reading ability. If you stick with it long enough you will be exposed to a wide variety and genre of music for voice. You will memorize tons of songs and be asked to participate in vocal recitals.
