I can think of three reasons why people spell things wrong so often.
1. They are in a hurry and don't bother to check spelling.
2. Their primary language is something other than English.
3. They don't know any better.
Since it isn't really obvious in most cases which one of these reasons, if any, apply I don't think it would be right to judge someone based on their spelling.

No why should they be there are plenty of reasons why people can`t spell and even if there`s not a reason like being Dyslexic or having English as a second language why should someone be judged by the one thing they can`t do well ..it would be the same as judging a persons worth because they can`t sing or draw
And what people who can spell don`t seem to understand is how spellcheckers work . To use the spell check you need to pick the correct spelling from a list .IF you don`t know how to spell how on earth are you supposed to choose the right one .You wouldn`t have a clue which word to pick .

Yes, it's a mark of character. If you don't spell correctly then it shows a lack of detail in the things you do generally in life. An, example: If you wanted an estimate done for building work on your house and it came back with all sorts of spelling/grammar mistakes on it, would you have second thoughts about employing that company? I would; it shows a blatant disregard for the customer and a lack of respect. If they can't be bothered to ensure the spelling/grammar is correct, then how could you trust them to do the work properly. On Yahoo Answers, you have no excuse. Here you have a spelling checker AND the opportunity to preview it before sending. It doesn't necessarily mean you're stupid but it does show you are either lazy or can't be bothered.

No! Never judge anyone on their spelling.A lot of very intelligent people are dyslexic. Sometimes Spell check won't even work right for me. There is no spell check on the lower half of where you ask the questions. I know two women who were Special Ed. and although sweet women they are not at all bright (not there fault either) but these two women can spell almost any word you put to them. I had a boss who had a Masters Degree and she could not spell. So please don't judge some one by misspelled words.

Most email softwear (sic) has a spellchecker on it so it either shows that a) the sender was just too lazy to check it or b) they looked at the words and thought they were correct, maybe they're just not very good at English .
You should see some of the emails I get at work from so-called "proffresional " (sic again) business types. Horrendous.
Perhaps because of the informal nature of the internet, grammar and spelling have become less of a priority than the actual communication.

No way! People come from all walks of life & may have a very good reason for their spelling errors. Don't judge them by their spelling. Surely if you find someone to be a honest, true and good person then their spelling really does not come into it.

I really do think it matters on what section your talking about. Go to the singles and relationships section and ask, does spelling really matter if it is legible? Then go to the Society and Culture section then to religion or the politics category and ask your self if it matters more. It's like giving a business presentation. You can't speak slang with your normal friends but will you do that at a business meeting? Depends the topic. You may seem stupid in some cases and in others comfortable.

No they should not. its a fact that in the uk children that went to school in the 80's ofetn cant spell due to the change in teaching methods which they realised didnt work and changed them back. i am one of those children who when made a spelling mistake the teacher did not correct as they believed that it wasnt required as we would learn eventually. This wasnt the case and i have had problems all my days and been treated stupid because of it. Im not stupid i just cant spell very well i have a degree and my own business and my spelling has got gradually better now that i am 35. please dont judge on spelling.

Poor spelling and grammar is a pet peeve of mine, but on-line like this, I relax my expectations of myself and others; it's supposed to be fun, not uptight.

In the workplace or business communications though, I'm a stickler. I will never understand how anyone with a high school education, say nothing of a college degree, can send a business letter with grammatical errors and misspelled words.

I have canceled business over it, and with no bad feelings about doing so. I do tell them the reason though, to give them the opportunity to improve in the future, just in case they don't know.

Whether a person should be is questionable.

That poor spelling will cause some people to be judged is certain.

If such a judgement concerns you, use the spellchecker.
Or adopt my excuse, which is that I can spell, but I can't type.
