It started in 1893 as an insult to farmers who became sunburned on the back of their necks after working all day in the sun. "Redneck" is now, however, is now commonly used as a derogatory name towards poor white Southeners who we tend to picture in low class situations (...think trailer parks)...

red states was the arbitrary use of color by the media in presidential election maps (they made Reagan red and Mondale blue - I'm not sure if it was that election when it started, but it was an election after color TV so probably after the 1960s)
wow, I was wrong, Reagan was actually blue and Mondale red, so the colors have switched back and forth, it was the 2000 election when the current color scheme was started
