they dont say if it is a one dose thing, or if it goes evry 2 weeks or anything just says to give them 1 tsp per 5 lbs. He is 25.4 lbs so I gave him 5 tsp. How long does it take to work? when do I give him another treatment? Do I have to give him another treatment? Do I have to shampoo the carpet? We are going to bleach his doggie carrier and machine wash all his toys on hot. Will the cat get these worms? We are at an extended stay hotel and will be for some time and there is high dog traffic and limited areas where I can walk him as we are in Miami now. I have been taking him to a totally different area to deficate but it seems there is only so many areas he is allowed to go to go to the bathroom. I have looked on the Hartz website and it was the same info I already have which I am not satisfied with....Please help me with my questions...also are we at risk of getting the hookworms? Do we need to go to the doctor?

you really need to go to the vets and have the dog tested for worms and get the meds from them. Hartz doesn't really work and doesn't kill everything.
You don't have to take the dog just a stool sample. make sure they know what you treated already with and how much they may want you to wait a little while.
But I would do this as soon as possible and if nothing is found have stool sample rechecked in about a week.
I don't know about Miami but here in Va. I pay about $5 for a sample to be run and then depends on what you give .
You may want to have her heart worm checked and then start on heart guard or something like that which prevents a lot of the worms.
I don't believe you can get the worms as long as you keep cleaned after taking care of the dog and yes it can be passed to a cat so if you have one again stool sample ad heart worm check and preventative

Hookworms can affect humans. They don't act the same way as in dogs, in humans it is a skin infection type infestation. In dogs it is in the intestines where they suck blood. Dogs can die from them.

Read the label on the Hartz thing. Most of those OTC wormers only treat roundworms. They are almost worthless to waste your money on. If you gave it to him today, then you should see dead "spaghetti" strands in his droppings within 24-48 hours. But I doubt it works for hook worms. You need a pyrantel based wormer for that. You can buy it from a feed store for about $6. You can also buy it from Jefferspets or other online pet supply. Most Hartz or Sargent products like that really are a waste of money. They don't kill the worms and cost more than the good stuff.

And yes if you dead worms in the stool retreat in a week. Then use it once a month to prevent reinfestation. Finally you don't really "have to" do a stool sample at the vets. Just treat the dog. It won't hurt to treat him whether he has it or not.

Hartz is some bad stuff! As the other said, Panacur can be ordered. This is what the vets were using. They have now switched to Pyrantel Pamoate. I get Worm X for large dogs from Valley Vet. He'd only need 1/2 a tablet at 25 lbs. My dogs love this and will eat it with no problem.
I am currently trying Diatomaceous Earth for a hook problem. Too many rescues and my yard is infested. I mix the DE with some homemade dog food in the morning. It seems to be working.

You can get hook if you are not careful. Do not walk barefoot where the dog has pooped. Wash your hands after playing with him. And no kisses on the lips!

Honey, that stuff really doesn't work. For the money that you spent on it, you could have just had your vet give you wormer that would have worked. Most products made by Hartz use low quality ingredients and are basically a waste of money.

Anything made by Hartz is dangerous and/or substandard. Take a sample stool to your vet and he will give you exactly what you need. I use Panacur which I get online for my foster dogs.

Do NOT use this product !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (or any other OTC dewormer). This product is NOT safe!!!!! If you think yo need to deworm your puppy then get the proper and safe dewormer from a vet.
How do you know he even has hookworms??? They usually can't be seen in the stool..they usually can only be detected in a fecal test done by a vet.
