My wife was injured in March of 2006 while in Basic Training for the Army. She is in the National Guard. After being sent to the PTRP for about two months she was sent back to her home unit. They have been compensating her since her return in a hope that she heals. After multiple visits to the doctors for her knee injuries (both knees) the doctor wants to do surgury. The military wanted a second opinion from Walter Reed and have yet to get her an appointment there for evaluation. Her origional Line of Duty stated the injuries in both legs and a few months ago the LOD was altered to only one leg, although both legs are still messed up. They have yet to change the LOD back after several attempts so she can get medical coverage for both legs. Can anyone tell me the process of a medical discharge and what her entitlements would be from this information provided as far as education, disability compensation, etc? My main concern is her surgury to be paid for. Thanks for the input!

She doesn't want to get out. You want her to get the surgery while she is on duty. When people get discharged from the service they become less than dog droppings. Let her stay in and get repaired.

The most important thing to do is to make sure you have copies of any and all exams. Whether her LOD is for one leg or two, once she gets a medical discharge, VA will give her free and full medical coverage. What the Army is really trying to do is cut back on the disability. If both her knees were bad, she would get twice the amount that she would get if one were bad. The great thing is, as soon as she gets out, she can go to the VA, show all her medical records, and they will help her get exactly what she deserves, despite what the Army says.

I broke both ankles both shins and my left knee in Army Basic Training in 2008. I was told that they were stress fractures, They would heal in six months and i could return. They were wrong. After 6 years of fighting the VA and Appealing their decisions I have got medicare and this year I have had 1 ankle surgery and 3 back surgeries. I have had to pay 20% of those. I am unable to work and the VA only pays me 569.00 a month. I have 3 boys. Do not take a general discharge, "MEDBOARD" You Probably think You are going to get better and return. Your not.

Don't get out of the military without a complete and correct statement of medical condition - getting it changed later is hell and if it isn't in the record the VA won't do a thing.
With current publicity about how Reed and VA have botched things, contact your congress(wo)man for help - the Army respects (fears) a Congressional. You might wish to take your story to a local TV station.
