Is it a good one for a first timer?

Yes I have. I qualified for Boston there. The course is downhill at the start, so be careful and don't go out too fast. Then it settles down and is mostly flat the rest of the way.
I think it is excellent for a first marathon. I also recommend Napa Marathon in March. Good course in scenic wine country.

Whether it's a good marathon for a first timer depends on what your goal is. If it is to run a fast time or simply to finish than YES. If you want to have fun and enjoy the sights, sounds and surroundings than I would recommend either the Disney, Rock & Roll or Marine Corps Marathons.
