You will find that I am in opposition to just about all the replies you have received up until now. This is something that I discussed with my Vet.,just yesterday ,as, I needed a definitive answer about this very question.
Having bred several breeds of dogs over half a century+ , I maintain that you should consider a female to be in heat for 30 days. The reason I say this, is because it takes an experienced dog owner to be certain exactly when the "heat" started, as being one day off could be the reason for an "accidental breeding". If you are determined to keep your dog from getting bred, the thirty days is your best bet.
Please make sure that you mark your calendar the very day that you first spot the blood . I mark the calendar from the day that I see the first swelling about the vaginal oriface and count 30 days from there.
Remember that your female will carry the scent of the heat for several days after it is actually over ( even if you bath her) and you really don't want to deal with some agressive male who doesn't take "NO" for an answer.
If you are experienced at breeding dogs, then I expect that you have your own theories.
However, my own vet's reply to my 30 day guideline was ," I wish more people thought that way! We would have far less unwanted pregnancies if more people were that cautious!
Yes, the vaginal discharge will change in color as the heat progresses, but, the only way to be certain whether she is ready for breeding is to do progesterone levels!
Do be careful that she doesn't get bred by some "travelling man of a dog" as oversized puppies of unknown sire could contribute to serious complications for your female ,or death!

You should definitely get her fixed if you are not intending on breeding her. Its better for you and the pup. Watching your pet in heat is hard...they really suffer. I just adopted a 2 year old chihuahua who was not fixed and the poor guy was humping everything left and right. You could tell he was suffering, not to mention the fact that he was molesting us and all our guest..lol...we had him fixed 2 weeks later and now hes like a different dog! You have a female so obviously you wont have the humping problem, but she will still really suffer...plus bleed all over the place which is worse! Definitely look into fixing her soon. If money is an issue, go to the ASPCA website and look at what they offer...I know in NYC they have a mobile clinic that goes around and neuters and vaccinates cats and dogs for free

After about 12 days her discharge will almost dry up. That's when she can get pregnant for about 4 days. Then the discharge will come back in a small amount for 5 days. This is a textbook heat cycle, individuals can vary.

You mean she is in "heat".
She should not have any heats at all because you should spay her, tomorrow!
It is a lot of work to deal with a female in heat, so why not take the easy route and have her spayed!!!!
