Everybody tells me our society expects its members to get married . If that's the case, why have I been allowed to be single for forty -- five years ? Why has NOBODY said "Mike's being wasted on the single life !" . I hate being single .

People do the common law thing more these days.

I know more people waiting to marry for the first time longer than was common in the past...or waiting longer to remarry after divorce...I've met more guys in recent years in their 30s and 40s who have never been married (or claim that) than I'd have imagined...

So, I'd say I personally see no sign of society being obsessed with marriage...although the divorce rate is high, the rate of people marrying seems much lower than in recent decades.

I often get asked when me and my boyfriend of 4 1/2 years are getting married. I say that they will be the first to know and that we are happy with in our relationship now. Also, everyone assumes we are already married (we live together). They'll say "oh, I was talking to your husband/wife...". We just let it slide.

It's not that our society is obsessed with marriage, we just don't want to be alone...

I think more then ever, people are waiting longer to get married these days.

Some people want their independence. Some people want a companion...

Not as much as it was decades ago. Look at the growing number of couples that are now living togther and not married.
