1. What products are out there that will test for a wide array of indoor air quality problems (I'm particularly interested in allergens and aerobiology affecting ashtma symptoms)?

2. Can a lay person test their own home?

3. Is there anything out there that would be re-usable (like an digital meter instead of, say, a petrie dish)?

It depends on what you are testing for. For instance, if you are testing for Radon, there are over the counter kits for it.

But if you have allergies, or are sick in your house, then you will want an industrial hygenist to come in there and sample your home for mold, other....

ME? I would not do it because I am not qualified to do so and I have been doing environmental field work for 20 years.

1. You can do a quick search on VOC sensors on volatile organic compound sensors. This will detect anything from formaldehyde to more subtle pollutants such as ketones that people produce.

2. If you acquire the correct equipment, yes. Depending on how well your assessment is, you may or may not get an accurate reading.

3. I am not aware of any VOC sensors that are not reusable.

4. You should try and understand your problem before deciding to purchase or perform any tests. You can educate yourself more about indoor air quality in some of the many sources out there.
