Because the paperwork is really expensive and takes forever. If it was easier there wouldn't be much of illegal immigration. It is ridiculous in my opinion to ask someone to wait tens of years for something. That's why. If they could be legal and pay taxes they would rather than stay illegal.
Edit:
I agree when you say that the real issue is it being so hard 2 do it legally. I think they should make it easier so people will want to do it the right way. and we'll know who is in the country and leave the bad seeds out.

I just can't imagine that living fifteen people in a two room apartment, waking up everyday and worrying that i could be deported, living in some slum, exposing my children to drug dealers, shopping at and living off the food from the dollar store, living in a different country where i can't understand the language, read the newspaper, have to drive illegally and uninsured can be any better than living in the country of my birth, getting my subsistance from my traditional foods, living in my little hometown, with my friends and relatives, working in the fields of my neighbors farm, living the life I was meant to live. Why would the Illegals want to give up all that they were born into, just to come here, and be treated and used like a slave by big American companies, and break the laws of a different country? Yes, we are a great country and there are many opportunities, but not if you immediately place yourself into the substandard criminal class upon entering the country. Come in legally, demonstrate that you WANT to become a citizen, and the opportunities are endless !!!

Some of the answers are tooo funny! Especially the ones about welfare. Too many are concerened about welfare benefits... oh we are paying for it blah blah blah... what about allllll the AMERICANS here doing the same thing?? I don't see any issue with that though. Taking all the benefits? LOL sounds like people are afraid that maybe there won't be anything left for them to sit around and do nothing all day.

Because they are too lazy, they want to live here and not wory about paying taxes and suck the tax money from the rest of us who are here legally with their welfare when they can't find a job because they are illegal. When they can find a job it takes jobs away from citizens because they don't have to get minimum wage and companies like that and so will hire them over citizens.

it form of feels to me that maximum those that go away their abode u . s . to go back to u.s. are determined and are keen to do some thing to augment their lives and are keen to renounce each and every thing to go back, even their language and custom. My grandparents got here only for that reason and made a existence the following and that i have continually well-known their braveness. They were no longer regulation breakers before they and were no longer regulation breakers after.

Most from Mexico come here because Mexico has such a horrible economy. They don't want to wait to come legally, they want to come NOW. For some, it's come here illegally or starve to death in Mexico

They come to look for a better life. Getting in here legally takes many many years. My cousin has been waiting 20 years to get in to this country.

It is easier to survive on welfare in the U.S. than it is to change the elitist tyranny of their own government.
They would rather give up their friends and families than do what is right.
Don't worry. we will pay them to protest in our streets so they can bring ALL their relatives here to live on welfare.
