And why should someone consider this path of spirituality or philosophy?

I'm not, but I do know a bit about it. There is a difference, because LaVeyan Satanists don't believe that Satan exists; therefore, they wouldn't worship Satan. Theistic Satanists do. You can find more info at the Church of Satan site (http://www.churchofsatan.com/) or the Wiki link below.

A moderm LaVeyan Satanist basically an atheist who follows a simplified form of Objectivism (which is a philosophy developed by Ayn Rand and known for its support of laissez-faire capitalism), with a dash of Nietzsche, and has a need for rituals and ceremonies with dark imagery for psychodrama. Objectivism (and obviously also Satanism as developed by Anton Szandor LaVey as they are very similar in some ways but not all) does not believe in "altruism" and upholds the virtue of rational self-interest.

Anyways, These should help:

While most Satanists are LaVeyan (and thus atheistic), it does not mean that all are LaVeyan.

no, i'm not a satan worshipper because i don't believe in satan.
i'm not exactly a satanist either but having read a bit about it, it makes a lot of sense. i guess i'm a non-practising satanist. i agree with the majority of the philosophy but i don't see the point of the ritual and stuff.
i wouldn't say someone 'should' consider it but i wouldn't say they shouldn't either. i would suggest someone read up on it a bit if they don't know about it. i did and it made a surprising amount of sense.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satanists cannot be atheistic, because one cannot believe in Satan with out also believing in God.

Satanists, in order to be true Luciferians, would quietly try to lead Christians astray from their true path by appearing to be true believers and then slowly pervert the teachings.

"Satan worshippers" are simply bored people looking to have a weird "good time" on the weekend.

The name is misleading. You don't assume Jews worship something calle Judea, do you? Satanism is an atheistic, humanist philosophy.
