What if I left out a job on my resume. Can they find that out?

Generally the term "background check" refers to checking databases to see if you have a criminal record.

I work in the staffing industry. I'm not aware of any accurate and complete database of all the places that you have ever worked. We generally check two previous employment references for each candidate. We just call them based on the information you provide on your application. I have no easy way of researching where you have worked before.

Unless you are applying to the FBI or the CIA, most companies won't do extensive checking of your background. So you you don't tell them you worked for ABC company, they will probably never know.

However, may employers look at the dates that you worked for each company, and want an explanation of the "missing time" when no job is listed. That could be a problem for you.

I guess that I could run a "credit check" on an applicant. And that would show me some of the places that they worked, but most credit reports don't keep a complete history of every place that they ever worked.

What are you actually worried about? Did you work for their competitor?

I really shouldn't answer this cuz I only think I know. I did background checks for the YMCA and very few things ever came back. Most Internet company's, like the one the YMCA used are very cheap and fast so.... not very accurate. If the company pays out the big bucks and waits two days or longer, maybe but I still dont think so!! Unless its the government or somethings with high risk and lots of security.
So what if you leave a past job off. Whats worse the company finding out you didn't tell them or what the past job has to say about you. I will tell you when I'm hiring someone I look for gaps in the dates. If there is a gap of more then 2 months then something is up. They are lying or lazy and dont want to work.

If you had to provide a social security # for all the companies you worked for in the past, then yes they'll find out.
The background check is a history run off of your social security #. Your ss# tells all.
