Try Rootschat.com.
You don't have to pay, although you do have to register. It doesn't have any records I'm afraid. But i have used it and people are surprisingly willing to share the information they have, some will even look up info for you. I have used it and managed to find a cousin.
Apart from that, you will have to pay.

Hi,

It may be a good idea to get a free months trial at ancestry.co.uk or if you want longer you can pay as you go for £9.99 per month. I have just had a quick look and I have found two people of your grandfathers name in the death index which in turn gives the dates of birth, so you could go on from there. I suspect that it is the one who died in Glamorgan in 1997, however the other is 2001 in Mid Powys. However, if your Mum knows when he was born it would help matters greatly.

Have a go, just google free 30 day trial Ancestry.co.uk

Is it a surprise that you need to pay for copies of records? Why not contact the other family and just ask?

You could get the book Tracing Your Ancestors by D.M. Field .

You will find that they sell it at Amazon new or secondhand.

If you find it that difficult why not try The Salvation Army. Not sure if they would be helpful tracing dead relatives though
