Ok, forget everything else but WHY taking the risk?

Question

One thing is you all have to agree that you dont know everything of the world, me too. I don't know everything.
Maybe as a muslim I'm following a fake religion that has no sense. Right, now if i start believing that there is no god, what will happen next? if there is actually no god, that's okay. Nobody is going to punish me for whatever I'm doing during my life period. After death, I'll just be mixed with the soil, and that will be the end of my story.
But suppose if there is a god, what will happen? I'll have to suffer the most painful consequence.
Now even if there is no god and I pass my life believing God, there's nothing wrong with that; rather I'm having a belief and for that I'm always trying to do things that are good.
But if there is a god & I pass my life without doin good things, what will happen?
I hope this time my qstn will make everyone think, cause i'm neither supporting any religion nor a god, it's just mathematics;

edit: now that i'm done drinking... saying the probability of there being a god or no god is 50% is wrong. you're assigning equal weight to the probable and improbable. let's put it this way. it's possible that you have a gun and are planning to kill me and my entire family. does that make it probable? either you do have a gun or you don't. does that mean the likelihood of either situation is the same. should i play it safe and report you to the police to save my family?

Golly. Its a thought we all toil with - believers and non believers. Look at it this way - IF god exists - you'll be fine God isn't vengeful. Nothing is gained by God being veneful -who would know? He wouldn't gain anything and it would be against his own teachings anyway. If he doesn't, you're ok too, by your reckoning. I say that God is my best friend and a constant in my life when everyone else is fickle and has their own agenda. God is just as much for us here on earth as he is for afterwards.
God is short for Good. Live a good life and go with the idea that a personal faith can help you when we try to make sense of this mad world.
PS - Footprints - I'd never heard of Pascal's Wager - but I've just read about it. Makes good sense - I like safe bets, though!!

In my mind, those probabilities tilt a bit more towards there being no god - I'd say its about 8:2 - because of the evidence against there being no god (evolution is more believable, there is possible evidence of life once exisiting on other planets, the world can be carbon dated as a lot older than 6000 years old, etc).

Besides, the risk can be fun and comforting; I believe there's no god because I'd like to think that my actions in *this* life mean something and its not simply a test.

i think i get what you mean i also believe there is a God but if there isn`t at the end of the day i lose nothing
but on the other hand if i go through life disbelieving but when i die i realise there is a God and i`m about to be judged then i have a problem

I myself believe there is one God or great spirit the word we use makes no difference he is one and the same for all religions
too many people can`t seem to grasp the fact that God .Allah, Jehovah ,The Spirit or any other name we use it makes no difference as these are names made by man for the same Entity .

Why do you think the probability of there being a god is 50%? Let's look at the evidence... er, there is none. That reduces the probability of god's existence right down, wouldn't you say?

But to reiterate what everyone else has said: what if you pick the wrong god? What if the real god is actually Odin, and he's really angry that you haven't feasted and died in battle?

When you think of all the possible gods there might be, the probability that you pick the right one has gone down even further. What makes you think the probability of Allah's existence is greater than that of Odin?

I understand what you mean....are you asking why take the risk of believing or why take the risk of not believing? If you are asking why take the risk of believing because it is beneficial to your life, you will die knwing that you did good in the world, no one can get you for that but if you live as if there isn't a God then you may experience some troubles. Don't get me wrong, when you are a religious person, you have some trouble thrown your way and it may be harder to get rid of since you have to figure out what is the right thing to do in God's eyes...so it's jus up to the person and the experiences in the person's life...

Sounds like Pascals Wager, but there are some flaws in it like there are lots of different religions. How do you know which one is right? Like you might find out you have been believing in the wrong religion. Also if someone is just worshipping God to avoid Hell then isn't it like they are using God? Like if someone marries a rich person just their money etc? Also I can't understand why a God who is suppose to love you would send a kind hearted person to Hell just because they didn't believe in him. I think lot of these religions threaten people with Hell to scare them in to becoming apart of their religion and using it as away to control people.

If you truly believe, you have nothing to lose and there is no risk.

If you are a doubter and decide that you will 'believe' just to be on the safe side, well if there really is a god, he will see though the deceit anyway. So you would be doomed anyway.
