I don't know why someone would. But I remember seeing this lady on Oprah once who stated that she works as a waitress and people who come in automatically assume that she is in college, and waitressing is her way of paying through school. But, I don't know why people would make that assumption anyway. I love good waitresses, and if you're SUPER good at memorizing a table of 14's orders, BIG TIP!

I don't! I think that would be a pretty hard job, people are really picky about their food. I always try to tip them well, as long as they are pleasant, do well or are really trying to do well. I give waitresses kudos! One time, I remember going to Steak N Shake one night and I think the waitress was having a really bad night and she had several customers, I overheard her about to cry in the back. I only ordered a grilled cheese or something, but I tipped, her like 10 dollars. Her face brightened up and she said "thank you so much" and it made me feel really good.

I don't look down on anyone that makes an honest living. There is nothing wrong with being a waitress/waiter. Anyone that looks down on them should try to do what waitresses/waiters do for a week. They might develop a different perspective if they had to walk a mile in their shoes.
Besides, it's not wise to tick off someone that handles your food. ;-)

Some people are just mean.
If a waitress provides friendly, professional, pro-active service then most people find will respond favorably.
However, there used to be a lot better service in the old days. Older people, in particular, are often frustrated by what they perceive to be lazy, disrespectful staff. They then reduce the job down to "take the order then bring me what I ordered. If you can't do that then what can you do?"

Oh, who are these jerks? I have never waitressed, but I often remark to my husband that I have no idea how these people can smile so much and be so polite to people that treat them like a servant and not servers. I think it's hard work and I tip well...waitresses and waiters deserve that much!

If a waitress/server gives good service, I don't think people look down on them at all. However, I've run into too many really lousy ones that didn't get a tip from me, and their establishment lost my business.

Alot of people think that anyone who does menial labor is uneducated which is mostly untrue and always unfair. There can be some pretty good money in waitressing.

Many consider it menial work, I've heard it compared to coal miners or maids. And the proverbial "You should go to college and get a degree." Well, I did go to college, I did get a degree, and I was danged proud of what I was doing. But the respect doesn't come with that. A server is just a lowly person on their way to something better (according to the public). I hate the public's perception of a server. Some of us love what we do, but we have to deal with rude people who think they're better.

Probably because many work for under minumum wage and for tips. Plus in many places it doesn't call for much schooling.
However dealing with Joe Public is for sure not an easy job. They do work mighty hard and long and earn every penny and deserve a good tip!!!
