Ark was a type of boat. God could have said "boat", and been somewhat ambiguous. That there was only one (perhaps?) isn't relavent. The purpose of using this word may have been to indicate that nothing like it had been made before.
Ark means, in general, a box, or container. As it was the first boat meant to be a container of such cargo, perhaps that is the reason for the word. The closest vessel today might be a container vessel.

He didn't say boat or arc, he wasn't speaking English. "Boat" is even used in some translations instead of ark. Ark is just a word for a really big boat.

"Ark" is just an old English word for a box or crate (cp. the ark of the covenant). Noah's ark wasn't boat-shaped (unlike the structure many claim is Noah's ark up on Mt. Ararat), it was a big box.
