do all engagement rings have to have a diamond? My fiance asked me what i wanted so he could pick the right one and i've decided i'm not really into diamonds. I was kinda wanting the stone to be my mother's birthstone (an aquamarine) because i thought it would be neat to have instead of a white diamond. My mother passed away 2 years ago so i thought it would kinda be a lil more special..... is this weird?

An engagement ring can be whatever you want it to be! It's your ring! I think personalizing your engagement ring and honoring your mother like that would be a beautiful thing to do, and not weird at all. Tell your fiance you'd rather have an aquamarine and not a diamond. Your ring will mean more to you that way. Congratulations!

It's not weird at all. In fact, engagement rings used to be birth stones until large diamond mines were found in Africa in the late 1800s. When diamonds got to be relatively more affordable, it became fashionable to have a diamond rather than a different stone. The diamond industry really took off in the 1930s as a marketing campaign. So, there is nothing sacred about a diamond. Have whatever stone you wish.

My engagement ring doesn't even have a stone. It's a sterling silver frog. When you look underneath, the frog is really a prince in disguise. It makes me smile every day.

Some women don't even wear engagement rings. I once saw a personal wedding web site where the groom had gotten the bride a new computer instead.

So no, a diamond isn't required. Since you don't want one, ask for something that's more meaningful to you. Not only is aquamarine very pretty, it's got real meaning to you.

I think it's a wonderful idea.

Best of luck and all joy to you and your guy!

No, there's no rule that says engagement rings have to have diamonds. But they ARE supposed to have special meaning and that appears to be the direction you're taking.

I have seen some aquamarines set in white gold, platinum and even an inexpensive sterling Silver that were absolutely fabulous. There are all kinds of really cool settings from the ornate to modern for you to choose from.

Not weird at all. There is a small percentage of women who don't get diamonds. There is no "rule" that all engagement rings have to be diamond. Any stone you like in a ring on your left ring finger will work. I love the idea of your Mom's birthstone, I think that is a great way of honoring her.

I personally love aquamarines as it is my birthstone as well. I'd look for a ring that perhaps has an aquamarine as the centerpiece and diamond accents. Also, go for white gold... it really sets of the subtle blue in the stone. I have an aquamarine birthstone ring in white gold and a princess cut... It's my favorite piece of jewelry!

Promise rings are actually not comparable to engagement rings. A promise ring is a hoop promising to stay actual to a minimum of one yet another. there remains no promise of marrying with a promise ring. An engagement ring is a hoop that symbolized that the two people comply with get married and plan a marriage interior the close to destiny

It can be anything you want. Usually you have one large center stone, and some people have side stones.

I do think you should separate your mother from your engagement ring and get the aquamarine for a right hand ring. Your engagement ring should be about you and your husband to be.

Diamonds are "traditional" now, but they weren't always. Till the 1930's or so, diamonds were NOT high fashion.

My engagement ring has a 1K black sapphire, high mounted, with very small diamonds channel-set along the band, in a white-gold mounting.

Its all up to you and what YOUR personal tastes are. Not everyone likes diamonds - I don't.

I think the most important part of the engagement ring, is when you look at it, it will bring a smile to your face, and a full happy feeling to your heart. Doesn't matter if it has a three carat diamond or cost 25 cents out of a machine!
