Christianity is an incredibly diverse religion yet a lot of Atheists here attack Christianity with volatile over generalizations. Not all Christians believe in creationism, that the Bible is the literal word of God, non-Christians are going to Hell among the numerous other assumptions. These attacks only provoke the fundamental Christians and demonstrate the complete lack of understanding of Christianity by many atheists on this site.

What is the point of this and where are the Atheists who are knowledgeable of religion?

Interesting answers so far,

I said that many atheists do this not all and I never said that I am a Christian, which I am not.

*bows his head* Right here, one of them.

It is not Christians I have a problem with, it's fundamentalists of ANY religion who use religion to blind themselves to the wonders they are supposed to believe that their deity or deities created, or fundamentalists who use their loving deity or deities as an excuse to hate, with whome I have a problem.

Generalization, hatred, and warmongering goes both ways. You said "all the atheists", which is a generalization, yet you state that not "all the christians" believe in the same things. So, you attack one generalization by asking about another?

As for the hatred and warmongering, do the Crusades, the Protestant/Catholic rift, IRA and Ireland, or the 700 club ring any bells? All warmongering perpetrated by Christians, both against non-christians and even other christian religions. Maybe some atheists still deal with it on a daily basis and decide to vent here, where they get equal time and stand on fairly equal ground. It can be hard to get a word in edgewise when you are 1 versus many outside of the internet.

As for the comments that atheists probably haven't opened a Bible before, while I am not a true atheist, I am NOT a christian, jew, or muslim, so have been treated with the same bile and venom, but I've read the bible from front to back more times than I can count or remember. How many christians have read it cover-to-cover? Far fewer than would like to admit. Most are "John 3:16" Christians, ie. they only know the same 15-20 verses that the priest/minister/preacher reads over and over again in sermon.

I've also read the Q'uran(Koran), Bagivad Gita, Tao Teh Ching, Gnostic texts, and a myriad of other religious books. I thirst for knowledge, for one, but for another, I believe that to know where a man comes from, you must learn where he's been. So, before I speak about Christians, obviously, I should read the Bible. Some atheists also say, "Know thine enemy." So, I'd hazard that a fair percentage of atheists have read the bible.

So, what have we learned here? Before you spout off about "all atheists", learn a little about a few atheists.

To go by their postings, most of them are wholly dependent on the mass media for their information and fundamentalists get a big play in the press because their outrageousness makes for good copy. Few atheists have any real awareness of any aspect of Christianity - or any other religion - that doesn't regularly get a big play in the press. For atheists,9/11 kind of put Islam on the map; until then, they were basically unaware of it,now it's even worse, they imagine all Muslims run around blowing things up. I've tried many times to convey to them that most Christians are Catholic,Eastern Orthodox ,Episcopalian or Lutheran; doesn't do any good. For them fundementalism is a favorite, rather like Rush Limbaugh, almost all of whose listeners were liberals: he was the Man You Love to Hate. To feel justified in their view that Christianity is backward or ultra-right,they would obviously seek to put the focus on the only element that conforms to that stereotype - Episcopalians are pretty well-educated - so that's what they do. Of course,as someone pointed out the other night,in the process of using fundies to defame Christianity they are also elevating them to a position of presumed leadership. This isn't valid, and you would think it would be the last thing on earth any committed atheist would want to do - strengthen the fundie claim to Christian leadership - but that's what atheists do whenever they address a question to "Christians" that obviously would only apply to fundies; the implication is that fundies are the centerpiece of Christianity. It's hogwash, but the fundies love it and for atheists - fundies are everything they would like to imagine a typical Christian as being. It all flows together, baby. It's also either hypocritical as hell - or just a matter of incredible ignorance.

Why are you capitilising the C for Christians, yet no longer the A for Atheists?? lol the two is actual... we are the two to blame of doing that for the period of Y!A... unwell upward thrust up and admit it, im to blame of doing so... yet unwell in no way get vicious or nasty approximately it. I dont actually "attack"... i dislike each and all the Christians I relatively have ever met, I relatively have reason to doubt whether Christians on listed here are any diverse... there could be some good in the entire Christian society... in basic terms desire i knew one in my view...

Christians who believe non-Christians do not go to hell, that the bible is not the literal word of God, etc. are liable to be attacked by some of their own!
The Anglican communion is currently struggling badly on what it is right to believe, and is liable to split on this.

I'm aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the fundamental and liberal wings of Christianity, to mention just two of many.

In terms of affecting others, it is the more fundamentalist
(defined for my purpose as "beyond evangelical") stance which stands out, so it does tend to be that sub-set of views which attract most attention and criticism.

I'm not sure I attack Christianity but, when promoted here, I'm not inclined to let the pronouncements and views of Christians pass without comment, as though there were no other perspectives.

actually, its the christians that started attacking everyone else that was not a christian...

that's what a christian is...! christians = atheists;

hell was created by christians - so shall they go there, to burn in their own hell!

christians DON'T go to Heaven;

christians have KILLED more people in the history of humanity than any other group.

christians have persecuted millions of "non-believers" just because they DIDN'T believe in "christianity!

christians are by far the most brain-washed - brain-dead believers in the world today!

christian beliefs can cause damage society, contributing towards high murder rates, abortion, sexual promiscuity and suicide.

christian beliefs are not only unnecessary for a healthy society but may actually contribute to social problems.

Universal Truth eliminates christianity from Spirituality.

I would like to know the same exact thing. & I find it funny how some atheists know so much about christianity. I also know that not all atheists attack the our religion, just like not all christians attack atheists.

Ah-hah

Trust me, its the other way around.

Christians are attacking Atheists.

The only good question they can come up with is:

"how did the kangaroos make it from Australia in time to board the Ark?!"

Christ has got you on the run.

Here goes the blame game.

They say "Christians started first" or they'er shoving they're religion down our throats.

This has been going on since the beginning, Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the serpent.

You clearly say 'all' not many.

The fact is most of the vocal born again types, do indeed believe the bible is the literal word of god, and that those who do not agree are going to burn in hell.
