Water, food, a knife and a flint (to start a fire).
It gets very cold at night in the desert and you need to be able to make a fire. If not, the desert cold will sap your energy and leave you in really bad shape. A fire also lets you cook food and boil water (to make safe). Everything else (including a compass) isn't needed.
