I have two tattoos, one visible, one not. Because I believe it to be more professional (for me, my decision), I choose to wear clothing that covers my ankle tattoo. However, there have been occasions where the tattoo has been seen. Since I take my job as a role model very seriously, I talk to the kids and let them know that I was an adult when I decided to get a tattoo.

I often have conversations about my kids concerning brain development and how the judgement of a preteen or teen isn't the same as the judgement of an adult. I explain it in a way where the kids don't feel as though I'm calling them babies or looking down on them. Because of that, they tend to take my "you should wait until you get older to decide" statements more seriously.

I don't see why not. It is a personal choice. It is not like committing a crime. In Pennsylvania, you could lose your job if you were a teacher for selling fake Rolex watches at a flea market, but I have never heard of a teacher being fired for having a visible tatoo.

You might not be hired if you have a tatoo covering your face, but something on your arms, ankles, feet, etc. should not be a problem.

Definitely! I am a hawaiian culture teacher, and I have a great amount of tattoos (called kakaus in Hawaii). I teach in Hawaii, but have also taught in California, Oregon, and Washington state. It's the knowledge, not the tattoos that counts.

I had a teacher that had the "Calvin and Hobbes" characters on his ankle. It wasn't a big deal. I think that a teacher that had a huge skull on his (or her!) arm or one of those large patterns on their back or something may have some trouble only because it could be distracting....

I guess it depends on the school. I don't think it would be a bad idea to cover them up when you're teaching. I have nothing against tattoos (I have one myself.) If you're trying to be a role model then tattoos bring you a little to close in age with the students.

Technically its allowed, but the adminisration would frown upon it, and it makes it harder to get jobs because of steretypses people have fixated in their heads. Its better to keep it hidden, have it somewhere on your bicep, or back hidden away.

As long as it doesnt have anything inappropriate, I guess it'd be fine.

If you have permanent makeup tattooed, would you have to wear band aids over your eyebrows to cover your tattoo? I should ask another question on this...

It depends on the local rules and regulations that govern the school, or [in the case of a private or Catholic school] its own rules.
