My understanding on this proposed immigration bill is that if the bill gets passed, all those here illegally will be given immediate temporary legal status. The only way that they would have to pay a fine or touch back to their country is if they want to become citizens or get permenant residency. There is no time limit as to how long they can keep their temporary residency, could be forever. They are under no obligation whatsoever to ever become a legal resident or citizen.
Is my understanding correct or did I miss something?

You got it! So, most probably won't pay the fine because they don't care if they are citizens. In spite of what several posts say above, you are correct on the issue about fines. Don't listen to them since they are wrong. (It's a common mistake.)

There is no way to track anybody to touch back at their country. Millions will lie about when they came here to beat the deadline. Millions of families will be allowed to come.

This won't stop the invasion. Millions will continue to come for the NEXT round of amnesty.

BTW, if a gang member wants amnesty he/she has to sign a document renouncing their affiliation with the gang - that not worth the paper it's written on.

In addition, all background checks must be completed in 24 hours. If they haven't completed the check, the illegal is automatically accepted. Background checks typically take MONTHS to complete.

And this is the bill that Bush says they need to "convince" Americans that it is good for our country. This is the bill that "isn't amnesty." This bill will "help Americans." "See you at the bill signing" was another of his insulting comments!

WE MUST STOP THIS PIECE OF CRAP FROM BECOMING LAW! We don't need new laws. We must enforce our current laws.

When the Washington weasels cry about how our immigration policy is broken, IT'S THEIR FAULT! All they have to do is start enforcing our laws. Jail the employers of the illegals. That would be a great start and it's easy! Dry up the jobs and they have to leave to find work! Why is that do hard?

Contact Congressmen and let them know this is wrong and that you WON'T VOTE FOR A PRO-AMNESTY CANDIDATE! This applies to Congress AND THE PRESIDENT! McCain should back his bags and go home. He's a traitor to America because of this bill!

No that is wrong. They will not have temp status forever. They would have to apply for a work permit which would expire after 1-2 years( they are still fighting over THAT time limit) with the option to renew it ONE time only after that. After that they can
a) Go home and start the process there or
b) Start the process here to become legal permanent residents which would not be a cheap enterprise
As of Aug 1, 2007, for a family of 4, 2 adults, 2 kids, would cost anywhere between $17,420-$18,920 to apply for permanent residency
This includes the following application fees which will be
$1,010 I-130(this is just for the Department of Justice to approve that to say they are eligible to apply for a green card)
$ 340 work permit
$1,010- I -485 ( the adjustment of status paperwork plus fingerprinting to become a legal resident)
The bill wants to have them pay BACK TAXES ( this might be removed)
They have to pay a fine of about $2,000-$5000
Not to mention retaining an immigration attorney
Quite a large group of them are exploited by being promised work permits and when they arrive, they are locked up in houses and told to go to work to pay off their "smuggler". This does not excuse what is done but the bill can help to get these people out of the clutches of the "coyotes"

You missed something. The temporary legal status is just that: temporary. They would have two years to make up their mind and get out. If they did not, they would face deportation. Either way, they would be fined, and most of them would not be able to afford to come back. The citizenship path would cost them thousands of dollars, and most immigrants don't have that kind of money.

Here is the funny part: if the law does NOT pass, then there is nothing on the horizon. No alternatives are on the table. Everything stays as it is, and immigrants get to come and go as they please. I am amazed that the anti-immigration bill is so strongly opposed to this bill. It makes it virtually impossible for immigrants to be able to afford to become citizens, and beefs up security of the border. That's more than what the anti-immigrant side has now. Weird.

Don't even worry about it, the bill isn't going to pass anyway! All the Congressmens jobs are on the line if they vote to approve the bill.

It's all smoke and mirrors. The illegal aliens are not going to abide by it and the government is not going to abide by it, it's only to grant amnesty to illegal aliens.

That's why American citizens CANNOT sit on the but*s and let Congress approve it.

It's all CRAP. Border security first and then we'll figure out what to do with the CRIMINALS that are already here.

yes and what is wrong with that. you can't deport them. and yes you can say you can, that it is possible. but the government won't do it. and they won't allow you to help.
