I looking to buy a good alround hunting rifle for Deer, Moose, and Black Bear. I hunt in Northern Ontario, so I'm not going to be shooting over 300 - 400 yards

I'm in the same situation, looking for a rifle, except I'm in NW Ontario (Thunder Bay). The 30-06 is what everyone keeps telling me for all around use. Reasoning is that it has a wide variety of cartidges and grains, which makes sense since you should use 200+ grain only for bear, but that would be overkill for a deer. For closer ranges the 30-30 is a very popular "brush gun", I've been told. I think I will opt for the 30-06 for those vast clearcuts we have up here.

Good luck this season.

For the above posters: it's illegal to hunt big game with a .22 in Ontario. It's illegal to carry a handgun in Ontario unless you have a trappers license.

You don't really need any more than a 7mm Mauser, but for moose most people want a bit more gun. 30-06 should do nicely. And no sportsman anywhere plans on shots over 400 yards. Northern Ontario is going to stretch your range as much as anyplace in the world.

You can't go wrong with a 30-06, nor with the 8mm Mauser, or with a 303 British. If you can pick up a military model of any of the three for a hundred bucks or thereabouts you can do a lot of shooting for fun with little outlay.

300 win mag. 300 ultra mag. 300 short mag. 7mm mag. 338 lapua. 338 federal (one of my new favorites)

You want something thats going to put those large animals down fast. Any of those should fit your needs quite well.

Also, while some may say those are overkill for the smaller deer, I disagree. I like my game to lay on the ground exactly where I choose to shoot it.

30/06 is the smallest you should consider. a 7mm or a .338 Winchester would work.

I would definately not reccomend a freekin' .30-6, That would blow a deer into lasagna. I reccomend a .22-250, .243, and around that calliber
