The short answer is: we don't.

And actually, the fact that there are no records of a guy named Jesus in ANY historical records until some 30 years after his supposed death, and that there are no independent accounts of any of the most obvious of Jesus' miracles (like causing an earthquake) in an empire that was famous for keeping meticulous records, it really calls into question whether the biblical Jesus existed at ALL....

We don't really "know" that Jesus walked on water if to know means to have historical proof that it happened. Christians are willing to believe what the New Testament of the Bible says about Jesus, including his miracles. But to believe is not to know in the sense that one has some logical and reasonable proof that something happened or that one has experience of the happening. However, there is a knowledge that comes with faith -- faith-knowledge -- by which one wills to accept as true something s/he hasn't experienced or has no other knowledge of. All Christians believe as true things that they cannot explain. And all of us practice some kind of faith every time we eat in a restaurant, where we are willing to believe that the food is safe and safely prepared.

Some scholars of the bible have different explanations of the tale of Jesus walking on the water.

Perhaps the authors who include this story are anxious to offer some "proof" that Jesus is divine. In Job 9:8, God "treads upon the sea." When Jesus speaks and says, "It is I" which could be translated as "I am," a reader might recall that this is the name of God given to Moses.

The words that are used to say that Jesus walked upon the sea could also be translated as "walked on the seashore." In the context of the other Gospels, "on the sea" seems to be more correct.

Since there is no reference to ice, one may not reasonably say that Jesus walked on frozen water. I doubt that in that part of the world the sea or lake ever freezes over, although there are some who claim that it is possible to have "spring ice." However, that is conjecture and there is no reason from the text to think that is the case here.

The story of Jesus walking on the water was probably part of the early oral tradition, the relating of stories about Jesus by word of mouth. Ultimately they are written down, slightly different from one another perhaps because they come from different oral sources. One thing seems to be sure: The story of the feeding of 5000 and Jesus walking on the water are seen as theophanies, an Exodus image showing Jesus as the fulfillment of the hope for a Messiah. Jesus feeds the people in the wilderness (as did Moses) and he passes through the waters (as did Moses). So, the reader should know that the kingdom of God is at hand.

Perhaps the message for readers is that Jesus is our anchor and that, with our eyes on Him we can get through the storms of life and come with him to the land flowing with milk and honey.

What gave you the impression that people back then weren't that smart? They have evidence of brain surgery in ancient Egypt(11th century BC)!! Mathematics and Astronomy come from the ancient Sumerians (14th Century BC)!!

The same way we know about the conquests of Alexander the Great, eyewitness accounts passed down and eventually written into text. Someone may have spun the story, like they will when they talk about the 9/11 events 2000 years from now.

All we can do is either believe the story or not.

I doubt that it was ice. Others would have walked on it. People would have noticed the waves stop.

While ice was uncommon in Judea it was not unknown. The higher mountains would have ice in the winter. Thunderstorms would produce hail occasionally.

Why think that he did it at all? Why think that he even existed?

All the Jesus miracles are lifted from previous mythology/biblical prophecies (He was the Messiah, it was prophesied - He MUST have done it then!) That grew and changed as they were told over and over.

Nothing was written down for, at best, 30 years after his death. After that it probably still grew in the retelling/transcription. Back then the telling of the TRUTH was more important than the telling of reality.

The stories of Jesus walking on water and controlling the wind and the waves are borrowed from Poseidon.

Turning water into wine at the wedding is stolen from Dionysus.

Descending to Hell and defeating Death is stolen from Hercules.

Most of the little anecdotal stories of Jesus are just reworked Cult stories from the region.

And believing it today, or believing anything from thousands of years ago based on the fact that it was contained in a book, is idiotic.

Everything from that time period has to be taken with a grain (or a shaker) of salt, especially the fantastic.

And no, people were not that smart back then. Things that we take for granted were completely unknown to them and the average person couldn't even write their own name, much less read anything. Their view of the world was distorted by the supernatural and superstitious.

A magician would have made a killing in those days.... Pulling illusions such as water to wine, curing the ill. Hell I've seen a preacher cure someone on TV that person fell down and all. It was so convincing.... I guess the old tricks still work on the simple minded.

Why would Simon Peter "sink" when he lost faith walking on "ice"?

They thought it was a ghost at first... I dont think a man walking on ice would seem much of a ghost.. would he?
