We will be on our first "shore" trip to New Jersey with the rest of my husband's family. I am just a Kansas girl and have no idea how to get around. We want to visit the New York City area for a day and want to know the best way to go without taking in a car. We will be in Sea Isle NJ. Want to drive in as close, but park and take another mode in. Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

It's a bit pricy ($40 r/t per person), but you could drive up to Highlands, NJ (near Sandy Hook on the shore) & take the Seastreak ferry to lower Manhattan (34th St or Wall Street). By driving only as far North as Highlands you'll stay far enough from NYC to avoid some traffic (1hr50min to Highlands vusus 2hr20min to Jersey City, which would be your next best bet). Also, the views from the Seastreak are fantastic: Statue of Liberty, Lower Mahattan, Coney Island, etc. Seastreakusa.com

Cheaper but not as much fun would be to drive to Journal Square, Jersey City, NJ. You can park pretty cheap there (About $9/day if you park right at the bus station, maybe $7/day if you park close by) and take the PATH train into Manhattan ($1.50/person each way). Sea Isle to Jersey City is about 2hr20min. www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/js.html

The Jersey Shore is great & NYC is (of course) fantastic! Have a great time!

As a former midwesterner and now a jersey shore girl I would recommend you do NOT drive into the city!! Parking is expensive and a pain to find. We always take the NJ Transit bus (they're very clean and all kinds of people take them) and it takes us right to the Port Authority Terminal which is 2 blocks from Times Square...its so easy. You could probably drive up to A.C. and catch the bus there. I don't know how much the fare would be from that location; we are further north and it costs us $29 per adult, round trip. Well worth it. By the way, kids are free on the weekends. Enjoy the jersey shore!

Yes, you can transfer from the NYC subway in New Jersey but you have to pay the fare separately. The PATH train departs from several locations in New Jersey. It goes to downtown Manhattan, by the World Trade Center. Several subway lines are within 2-3 blocks from here. It also makes various stops in Manhattan, including 14th Street and 23rd Street and 33rd Street. You will have to exit the PATH system and then re-enter the NYC subway system, but most of these are within 2-3 blocks of each other. You can also take a New Jersey transit bus to Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan and get the subway from there as well.

Figure out how close you want to get to the City - for example if you drive to Newark or Jersey City - you can take New Jersey Transit or the PATH train from there to midtown Manhattan. Links below. If you travel somewhere not quite as close, then New Jersey Transit train is probably your best option. However, if you want to drive all the way into the city (and deal with traffic, tolls and parking, then the Holland Tunnel is closer than the Lincoln Tunnel. Holland Tunnel will get you to downtown, Lincoln will put you in midtown. Either way, driving into Manhattan is usually quite miserable)

I'd recommend using NJ Transit to avoid the traffic and stress. Once in NYC just use the local MTA buses and Subways around town.

lincoln tunnel. you enter on new jersey side, come out in nrw york. following any map you have is much easier from this starting point.

from her you are almost downtown, where you will find broadway, time square, st patricks cathedral, rockefeller center ans so very much more.

it's a great city, enjoy every minutr of it. i took my mother last year and it was amazing. would go back in a heratbeat!!

have a great time! jackie b

You are very smart not to want to take your car in.

Either take the path train: http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/
a bus:

or a ferry:

When you are in Manhattan use the subway for long trips and cabs for short trips.

Good luck and have a good time!
