Japanese boyfriend is always broke but brags about wearing only designer clothes. Something seems fishy?

I am currently dating a Japanese guy who recently moved here. He is very sweet and calls me everyday. Everytime we go out he says he is broke, but later on brags about buying designer clothes. We met on Thursday, hungout on Sunday and on Monday night/Tuesday morning he said he wants to be my boyfriend. That Tuesday he had to leave to Florida to visit a friend he knows from online. Is it just me or does something seem very fishy?

Being broke and always wearing expensive clothes are not mutually exclusive. He could be buying them on credit. He may be broke from paying the credit card bills, but still has available credit to buy more. You mention that he says he is broke when you go out, he may be saying that to get you to foot the bill. If he's going off to Florida to meet someone else from online, you can bet it's not just for coffee and donuts. I wouldn't be his "boyfriend", it's only been 5 days and you're already suspicious of his behavior. If you like him, go ahead and date him if you want, but don't get too serious or give him stuff or money, because he will take advantage of it. Just keep it casual. Your red flags are going up for a reason, don't ignore your instincts.
