Ok, my son likes to eat his food with rice, and every time I make it, it absorbs the water too fast, and i end up adding more water, and it gets mushy, i can never get it right...I want my son to eat, and i want to be able to make rice. Is there someone who can tell me step by step how to make it, from when to cover it, how much water, when to lower the flame, whats the best brand, every thing...i dont need "approximate". I follow the package exactly, so please dont just copy it from there, i need someone who does it themselves, and i dont have enough money to buy a rice cooker, i use a pot, thanks alot, it would really help.

I cook rice almost everyday and I'm yet to follow the directions from the bags or the packages.
I normally use a pot on the stove as well, my rice comes out good every time.
If it's just for you and you son, you should use about 1 cup of rice but if he's a big eater then 2 cups should be fine.

Follow this recipe
2 Cups Rice ( I use Enriched Long Grain Parboiled rice)
31/2 Cups Water
1 tsp salt ( Optional) I personally do not use salt in my rice

Put Water on high flame along with the salt ( remember salt is optional)
When water is boiling add rice and stir together to prevent it from lumping up.
When water gets to the second boil, lower the flame to medium/low and let it steam for about 20 minutes.
After 20 mins, all the water should be absorbed and the rice should done.
Serve.

Note: 1 cup rice = 13/4 Cup water.
if making stuff like rice and peas or anything like that then you use.. 1 cup rice = 2 cups liquid

This is the average measurements of rice per family:

3 cups rice
4 1/4 water

Wash the rice a couple times. Add the water and stir the rice before you cook it. Make sure that no rice is hanging on top of the rice. Turn on high heat until it boils. After it boils, turn the heat to low and leave the lid closed. Every couple minutes, you should taste a small amount of rice and see if it's soft enough for your taste. When it's done, you can turn off the stove. I use Thai jasmine rice with a pic of the Buddha as the logo. It's about $28 for a huge bag. It's more expensive than the other rice you buy, but it's worth the money. If you like Japanese rice, I use Kikuho Rose for sushi.

First off, you can buy a rice cooker for under $20 for a small one. I'm Filipino and I've probably eaten a plate of rice for every meal I've had my whole life, with the exception of the last 3 years. I like Jasmine rice.. If you can find Jasmine rice with 3 Elephants on the bag, making a sort of 2 dimensional triangle shape, this 25 pound bag for approximately $12- $15 has the best taste. And best smell when cooked.

I never measure using an actual measuring cup, but you can. I like to use a coffee mug, regular size, scooping rice out of the bag and dumping it into a pot. For every 1 cup of rice, you should use about 1 1/2 to 2 cups of water.

I also like to wash the rice to get rid of any excess starch. Use cold water and rinse the rice 1-3 times, until you can put the cold water in and see the rice pretty clearly. To measure and make sure you put the right amount of water, you can dip your middle finger into the pot of rice and cold water, and if the water reaches your first knuckle, you have enough water. Or if your pot is big enough for you to fit your whole hand, you can lay your hand just on top of the layer of rice, if the water line goes up to your top knuckles, then you have enough water.

Now place the pot on the stove, set the heat to medium-high heat and cover. It should take about 10-15 minutes for the water to boil. You really want a soft boil. At a soft boil, stir your rice, turn the heat down to low-medium heat, cover, and let simmer another 5-10 minutes. Check it. It should be done.

Your doing good so stop at the point that you add extra water.Just use the amount that is on the package of rice you use. Usually it is a 1:3 ratio for regular rice if you want a drier then use a 1: 21/2 ratio and I'm not sure for instant rice. For when to lower the temp. you first need to bring the water with the rice in it to a rolling boil then put the setting on simmer.
Simmer for 15 min. stir, put lid on it and let sit for 5 min. Then fluff and serve.
You may want to use a broth for more flavor, instead of water, a few spices. There is no need to buy a rice cooker. Unless you want the convenience. All brands of rice are good as there are many. Buy some in small packages use those and you make up your mind as it is you and your family that will be eating it

You're probably not simmering correctly (the part where you leave the lid on for about 15 minutes). You should only see about three or four bubbles per second before you put the lid on. It's difficult on a gas stove because it's hard to get the flame really low without it going out. But if the water is boiling, not simmering, then the rice will cook too fast. I use the package directions. Keep using them but make sure you're doing the simmer part correctly. And don't lift the lid more than you have to. Turn on the timer and let it go.

My daughter LOVES rices also and I also can not cook rice however I can cook the instant rice the ration is the same it is even amounts so say you want 1 cup of rice you use 1 cup of rice to 1 cup of water put the water in a pot and bring to a boil after it is boiling put your rice in and stir and cover the pot and torn off the heat even move it to a diffrent burner so you don't get carry over cooking and let sit for about 5 minutes then go back and take the cover off and all the water will be gone and your rice will be perfect.

I use Basmatti rice and this is what I do. Use 1 cup rice and rinse it three times. Add 1 1/2 cup water and put on high heat. When it starts boiling, stir once, turn to simmer and put the lid on. After 15 mins see if any water is left. If there is just put the lid back on and turn the burner off and let it sit a few mins. If not, then it's done! It should be nice and fluffy. Don't lift the lid once it's on and don't stir more than the one time. Good Luck!

White rice:

1:2 ratio of rice:water

So if you want to end up with 2 cups of rice, boil 2 cups of water. When the water is boiling, add 1 cup of rice. Don't stir, don't touch it. Reduce heat to low and cover the pot. Cook on low for 20 minutes without taking the lid off. NO PEEKING!! After 20 minutes of cooking the rice should have absorbed all of the water and should be perfect.

The general rule is two cups of water to one cup of rice, ( i use jasmine basmati rice) if u r doing this , use a little less water. also on humid days rice absorbs more water, so sometimes u need to adjust for the weather too. Wait for the boil and add rice, wait for the second boil and lower the flame and then cover, cook for twenty minutes on low flame. wait five minutes and fluff with fork. I love rice have u tried orzo pasta and rice for 1/2 Cup of each with the same directions above very Delicious and healthy for little ones add butter or margarine to this after it is cooked. Family loves it. Good Luck

I make rice all the time. Bring to a boil 2 and 1/2 cups of salted water. Add 1 cup of long grain rice. Cover and lower heat to very low. Takes about 20 min. Remove from heat, take a couple of grains of rice and eat to test for doneness. Should could out nice and fluffy. Mine does. If you still have trouble, check your lid to make sure it fits tightly. You may also try using bottled water. Any brand of long grain rice is fine.
