Beware, you must be joking, a bad workman will blame his tools. The site is excellent, in that it allows you to see other people whom are researching your family.
What you choose to do with that data is your own problem, If you do not use the data as a guide to check it in the archive, than you are the nut. Having spent the last 12 years searching through the archives for my family, and having to learn basic latin to get through the early wills, I was glad when I had the rough plan of a tree to guide my research. It is easier to check somebodies work than it is to go into a stack (record store) blind, and plough through a million and one records for anelusive relative.
Genes is also free for you to publish your tree, unlike many rip off sites, and very good value for money when you get enough hits. I have found 7 lost relatives with this site. I also use lost cousis to record my census returns free, I use one tribe to publish my tree free, and Family tree circles to share my research data.
Wake up, its not the answer to your family history search, it is the best free map to finding others with similar interests.

Information in family trees on any website must be taken as clues not as fact as most is not documented. Even if you see the same information over and over by different submitters, a lot of copying is being done which is not true family history.
Start with your parents and work back one generation at a time. Work one family line and if you come to a brickwall, set it aside and work on another family line.
Check with your public library to see if they have a genealogical section. If so, check it out. They might have a subscription to Ancestry.Com. Ancestry.Com has lot of records and obtaining more all the time. They have all the census records through 1930. The 1940 is not available to the public yet. HOwever, the family trees submitted on Ancestry.Com must be taken only as clues as to where to look not as fact. Their One World Tree particularly is a mess.
A LDS Data Center at a Mormon Church will have lot of records on people all over the world. They are very helpful. I have never had them to come ringing my doorbell because I availed myself of their services.
Too many people think they can find their family tree simply by using a website. They think it should all be free. That is just a bunch of bull corn.
Also you need to get as much information from your family as possible, particuarly senior members. Even if they are getting a little feeble, they can have a lot of informaiton. Tape them if they will let you.
What might seem to be insignificant ramblings and story telling, might turn out to be very significant. We old folks like to talk about old timey.

Tell me about it. I have just been on Ancestry.co.uk, and there too someone has posted huge amounts of wrong dates about my family with nothing backing up their info, and the person who posted is not contactable.

I wouldnt trust anything on Genereunited - its all secondhand info which has nothing to back it up. Anyone can post any old garbage on there - much better to do your own research.
