I cannot stress this enough - DO NOT get a cartilage piercing in a mall - go to a clean parlor, where they'll do the pierce with a needle, not a gun. It will cut down your healing time and it will heal cleaner. This pierce takes a long time to heal, and I've had mine for years & it still bothers me sometimes when I sleep on it (I had mine done with a gun - if only I'd known...) but it's dead sexy and I love it. Get it done right by someone who knows what he/she is doing, and I bet you will, too. Happy Birthday!

Cartilage hurts more than a second hole. I literally didn't notice when I got my second hole, and when I got my first hole I was 1 year old and slept through it so yeah. Cartilage does hurt, but I love my cartilage piercing more than my second holes lol. If you want to get your cartilage pierced, make sure you get it done with a needle. Because their safer than with guns, guns can cause your cartilage to shatter, and they are hard to sterilise. They use pressure to punch a hole in your ear, and often just push your flesh aside, whereas a needle actually takes a tube of flesh out to create a hole. Plus needles are supposed to hurt less when your dealing with cartilage piercings, also the manufacturers of guns say they are only suitable for use on ear lobes, even though some places use them on cartilage anyway. When you get your cartilage pierced it will only hurt for like a few seconds and be a little sore afterwarrds. At first first it feels like a burning sensation and then that stops and it actually feels like an injection. And then its over, when they put the earring in after driving the needle through you barely notice. I would say get your second holes first, because they hurt less and heal quicker. And then once they've healed up, get your cartilage pierced with a needle, as cartilage piercings take 6 months to a year to heal.

I work at a Claires but it depends on where you live because in certain areas they are only able to pierce ear lobes and not cartilages.. also in response to what a lot of people have said the actual piercing has nothing to do with the healing process. It is you and you only who affects whether an infection occurs. As long as you correctly follow the cleaning process everyday as directed you should have no problems, also if piercing is red and sore for longer than 24 hrs then you should see a doctor because some people are just not suited to having piercings and it irritates their skin too much..
A tattoo parlour would probably be best suited if your claires doesn't pierce cartilage.

In my opinion it is better to get that piercing done in a tattoo parlor because of how sensitive that area of the body is. With the piercing guns that are used, they can shatter the cartilage and the you would have to take it out and wait for it to heal before you get it pierced again. Whichever place you decide to go though, make sure that you know if you are alergic to any metals. Since that is a very sensitive part of the body, it is easily infected so I would try to get at least a gold plated stud and make sure that you clean it as often as possible. No matter how well I cleaned mine or what kind of metal I got mine pierced with, mine always got infected and I ended up having to take the stud out before it was healed. I pierced it four times before I finally gave up on the idea of having my cartlige pierced.
Good Luck and Happy Birthday.

Tattoo shop. They are more apt to be able to do this specific piercing better. Piercing Pagoda is more available for simple ear piercings procedures and are unlikely to do that exact piercing often enough to trust. In a tattoo shop though the chances of them doing that piercing are higher and they probably have more experience in it. Good Luck.

I have a cartilage piercing and I went to a piercing place that specializes in piercings and tattoos. It's better and safer, and they use sterile instruments and they have people that are certified for doing body piercings. Do not go to the mall or claire's to have it done because they use a gun and that is not sterile because they use that same gun on hundreds of people. a piercing place uses brand new instruments for each person and that cuts down on infections.

For your cartilage go a parlor. They use need, it's painless. But the needle they use is hollow and one gage then the earring, so it cuts the cartilage away and gives the earring room to heal and it will heal faster. When they use a gun it just breaks the cartilage which will form scar tissue around the hole and make an ugly bump on the back of your ear sometimes.

you should not get anything pierced with a gun other than your ear lobes. for cartilage or any other part of your body it needs to be done with a needle to make sure it is straight and not as easily infected. i go to a tattoo or piercing shop to get mine done. DO NOT go to claires, piercing pagoda, or any place like that. they only use a piercing gun.

I got mine done at Claire's with my mom. And I had to take it out because the pain was so bad. I would recommened that you do it at a tattoo palor or something where they know what they are doing.

Don't get it at Piercing Pagoda. I my daugter had her first two holes done there when she was 9. They did not heal for a year. Also, the one hole is higher up than the other.
I heard Claire's does a good job.
