Acetylcholine and eserine are parasympathomimetic substances. They increase the speed and intensity of peristalsis. Atropine is parasympatholytic. It has the opposite effect.

Peristalsis by smooth muscle in the gut is controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system, which uses muscurinic acetylcholine receptors to activate it.

All of the above are parasympathomimetics (they mimic the parasympathetic nervous system), by binding to the muscurinic acetylcholine receptors, and inducing smooth muscle contraction.

Hope this helps

EDIT: to answer your question better, they increase force of contraction, and thus increase the basal tone of the gut.
