The simple answer to that is to burn more calories than you consume. If you take a look at the amount of calories on fast foods / or frozen convenience foods, it's amazing that more people are not obese.
But this is what has worked best for me -- at least 3 days of long slow distance exercise --- with some intervals of faster exercise -- I walk 2 or 3 miles (or more) -- swim, and do yoga.
I have cut out fast food, soda, and I drink a lot of water.
Other than that -- I eat what I want.
Over the past 9 months I have gone from wearing a size 16 to a size 10. I'm still losing weight. The exercise is the key -- you can't just cut calories. Exercising helps your metabolism burn the calories you consume - and burn excess fat. Be patient, and keep at it -- that's my best advice.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

your routine should be
(1)walk up at 6:00 am
(2)eat two parathas with less oil and a glass of milk at around 9:00am
(3)eat dal and roti with some curd at around 2:00pm
(4)eat loki in the dinner at around 8:00pm

Look you are going to stop eating fat stuff and you need to eat lots of fruit like watermelon ,melon .orange,papaya and all kids of diffrent fruit that you could eat sow you whont get fat

go for power walks every day and drink protein shakes. drinking protein shakes will help keep you full so you'll eat less food.

GO TO WEIGHT WATCHERS!!!!!!!! THEY WILL TELL U ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS!!and any ways its like the safest way to lose wait cause its all natural. its not that hard either. HEY i lost 20lbs there so it works!!
