How many Catholics have reflected on the parallel of the Christian Mass to the story of the road to Emmaus? Is not the discussion of scripture a parallel to the liturgy of the Word? Is not the recognisation of Jesus in the breaking of the bread the Eucharist?

We reflect on that all the time. We actually consider the breaking of the bread at Emmaus to be the first Mass of the apostolic age, and it is perfectly symbolic of the journey a Christian takes to the faith - we bring our burdened and troubled hearts to the altar, and there in a surprising miracle, we learn that Jesus is and has been in our midst the entire time.

I supposed that a discussion of scripture as you mentioned it is more or less the liturgy of the Word, but simply recognizing Jesus during the break of bread does not constitute the Eucharist at least as the tradition has been preserved and passed on by the Catholic Church (formerly simply The Christian Church) since the time of the apostles.

What a coincidence Pastor Billy, I was just thinking about that at mass today... well, not the specific bits about the liturgy of the word and the liturgy of the eucharist, but the bit about "and they recognized him in the breaking of the bread."

Thanks for the food for thought - or meditation, in this case.

There are plenty of amazing parallels like this. That's one reason why I count the Bible as one of the inspired texts. There is so much depth in the various levels of interpretation. I love the Alexandrian Church fathers, because of their skill at gleaning levels of symbolism and allegory,.

Well, yes. That was discussed in our seminary class on the Liturgy often.

Hmmm,

It sounds like a stretch me, never heard that comparison.

You can draw many comparisons to different things though.

Peace!
