Better in some ways, worse in others. It may or may not be better for you depending on your needs and personal preferences. It is just different.

Linux is definitely better than windows. It is faster, more secure, free updates, free programs, and Linux is free. You should get Ubuntu 7.04, which is the latest version, because it is the most updated and most likely the best. If you are not familiar with the process of installing Linux, you should get a free Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (long term support) CD from Ubuntu ShipIt services. If you wish to download 7.04, you should go to Ubuntu.com. Download the ISO file. WHen downloading, choose a mirror that is fast, that is at least up to 100 kb/sec. Then, get PowerISO, which is free. Insert a CD into the CD drive, and burn the ISO file to the disc with PowerIso. When you first turn the computer on, go to BIOS setup. Choose the CD drive as your primary boot device. Then, restart the computer with the CD in the drive. I hope this helps.

I'm wondering the same thing :-)
I've been meaning to try out Ubuntu for ages but I haven't gotten around to buying an old PC to run it on yet.
It certainly has a good reputation but whether it is better than Windows or not is debatable: Windows and Linux work in different ways and have different strengths and weaknesses.

Linux is more stable than windows. However, some people are afraid to make the transition from windows to linux simply because they don't know anything about it.
Before you install it, I'd recommend you to go you youtube.com search linux ubuntu so you can see it yourself. Additionally, there are many links in youtube that will direct you to the websites where you can down load it.
YOU DON'T NEED TO INSTALL IT!!! If I were you I'd burn ubuntu to a cd, and run it from there to 'check it out,' if you feel comfortable then you can do full installation in your pc. Last, you can partition it to have both, ubunto and another operating sys. Good luck~ ('-')v

Well, it's free, easy to use, and there are tons and tons of free programs and applications available for Linux.
Ubuntu is a good "starter" version of Linux and is very easy to use. With Linux, however, it will take a little know-how and the ability to search for answers-- not everything will work exactly like it does on Windows. It takes some effort to use Linux, which is also why a lot of people like it, and why a lot of people don't.

If the programs you need only work on Windows then it will be worse. Like the person above said, it's different.
Get 7.04 which is the latest version (7 stands for 2007, .04 stands for April, so 7.04 was released on April 2007). Also, you probably want the Desktop Edition (not the Server Edition).
