Its all very confusing I know I can get a 1280 720 video on my lcd using my vga port and I can play hd trailers and stuff but not sure it that means its the full hd.

Don't confuse VGA resolution with VGA port.
Yes, a VGA port does support up to 720p (HD resolution) using VESA timing.
Officially, VESA does not support 1080p timing; however, there are graphic cards that can output 1080p over VGA using CE (Consumer electronics) timing; however, some 1080p TVs support 1080p input only via HDMI.
To make it simple, yes, you can display HD on your LCD using the VGA port.

VGa is not High Definition, its 640x480. is aproximately the real pixels of a standard Photograph.
To be able to play High Def Trailers and movies you need to get a HD DVD or an XBox 360 or some other device compatible with HD.
